Hi,

My CEL (check engine light) currently came on for my 97 RS . I know the whole deal about how to diagnose it w/ just the on-off-on-off-on way. It came up with 31 which is an EVAP problem. But recently the the CEL light came on for my 98 Corolla as well... so, i tried to search for a simple diagnoses like the eclipse, but can't find one. I'm not willingly to go straight to the dealership for the Corolla, so i am planning to buy a OBD II. I looked for some on ebay and they're fairly cheap, except that it says that it's not compatable with Japanese cars... just wondering if you guys can give me suggestions on which OBD II are cheap and works for both for ECLIPSE AND COROLLA..? Thanks.

You can buy a pretty complete set-up that will work off of a palm visor for about $300.00. These can be found on the Snap-on, Matco, Mac, Cornwell, or S&K tool trucks. The set-up will not only retrieve and clear fault codes but also check readiness status for OBDII tests, Monitor many sensor readings such as up and downstream o2, MAP sensor, Intake Air Temp, RPM, Vehicle Speed, Open/Closed loop status, engine coolant temp, and numerous other readings.

This system will work on ALL import and domestics equipped with OBDII systems. Additional software can be purchased that is vehicle specific. I'm currently waiting on chrysler specific software that will allow me to actuate solenoids and relays, check transmission fault codes and other transmission related systems.

One thing to keep in mind is that OBDII is designed to be relatively universal. In otherwords MOST OBDII scanners will work on all OBDII cars. This set-up will work on both the Eclipses and the Carolla. In addition to that, the 2gnt uses chrysler software and computers so it will not require a "Japanese" specific software package.
