carbon fiber hood question

it will look stock, the surface is smooth on it, so if u paint it with regular paint it'll look the same as stock. if u do a semi clear paint some will show through

another good idea is if you have a pearl paintjob, have your hood sprayed with only the pearl and clear coat. It will make it shinier and match the car but still have the carbon weave look to it.

I have read that you can mix your paint with clear, or dilute the paint more, and it will be more transparent. I was gonna spray my flames on my hood with just kandy, no base, but I didn't think the color would even be close to the kandy on the rest of the car. :|

It would look damn close...

I don't see how tho. The base coat is shimrim metallic orion silver. Very light/ basically just fine silver glitter. Then the hood would be kandy blue with a dark base. It'd be a darker blue I would think.

Are you using the Kandy on the car or just the hood?

u can only get "some what" close. if you really want matching color, try fiberglass hoods.

Tip the world over on its side and everything loose will land in Los Angeles.

We are talking about spraying kandy on cf VS. spraying it over a base coat.

The kandy on the space left in CF has a base coat under it.

OK, heres the color I want to do my car. I also got the idea from ImportTuner w/ the color. The color I want to do is CandyBrandy Wine Red. Except Im going to almost copy to guy from ImportTuner and use a base coat of pink instead of Silver. From talking to alot of people who spray cars on a normal basis told me silver is used for the porpose of bringing the candy color out instead of the base color? For example if a base white is used under a candy color, you might end up with a lighter shade of candy? That why Im going to use pink for my base, so a light red can stand out threw the candy when light shines on it, giving it the shinny bright red color, but when its dark out it will be a really dark almost maroon color.

Ok I found a pic that I was looking for, your right its not going to be exact color but you would see the tint from the candy on the hood, I included a pic.

Here is a mixture of both paints...this was "Farcon's" BMW at the Philly H.I.N show. His whole car has been cover or replaced with carbon fiber that has been painted solid red in some areas and then candied. Peronally I think the car's body is a work of art. I was really close on this car trying to pick it apart and it is well made! All the seams were well placed, etc....VERY, VERY SMOOTH body work and awesome paint job.....unfortunately the pictures do it no justice. The candy is so deep I can not tell if he used red kevlar/ carbon hybrid or straight black carbon? It all looks tainted red to me.

well idk how they make those, but i have seen ones that look reddish and yellowish and so on, idk if its in the weave or the resin, but they have a color to them a bit, theyre just a little more than regular ones

the ones that look reddish or yellowish are actually a mixed weave of carbon fiber(black) and kevlar(many colors). The kevlar comes in several colors and is woven together with carbon fiber to create the reddish or yellowish tinge.

I have seen the multi colored fabrics, but a hood could also have clear gellcoat with just a very small amount of pigment in it this would give it a colored tint but still tranclucent. If you can't achieve this effect with paint you could do the same thing with gellcoat. Pm me if you want info

That's a really good idea you bring up too...never really heard anyone mention it before. This is exactly what Lotus does for their body panels, no paint, just colored gel. Same thing for boats as well. There are a bunch of pigments out there and you can even mix them for a custom shade. Good call "yoshi". :thumb:

I took this picture at Eurofest NW.

this is on the side, it's a painted CF hood with the ///M logo left in CF

just to give you an idea of what a few cots of paint can do.
