I have a 99RS, today when I went to start it when leaving the mall it made this small almost explosion like sound and whiteish smoke started coming out of the engine bay. The car was still trying to turn over but sounded very bad. I opened the hood and one of the spark plug wires along with this long rubber looking tube was completely out of the valve cover. I had it towed to the dealership, but was wondering if anyone had an idea of what happened. The tow truck guy said it sounded like I threw a crank into the top area of the engine.

LOL, you only have 1 crank...and it didnt get thrown into the top of the engine :D the explosion sound could have been the spark plug flying out of its home...it must have been loose to do that...or partly stripped..the smoke........ermmmm..not so sure..compressed air decompressing

Well, apparently the last owner used a different kind of spark plug apparently not the right kind, and the spark plug from the number 3 cylinder blew out of the block, taking the threads with it. They are either going to Heli-coil it, or send the block out to a machien shop to get machined, dependign on what my warranty company says.

The service manager said that the OEM wires didnt fit right onto the plug and so it allowed it to move around or soemthing.

Smells like BS to me, but I don't know.

Does anyone know if I switch out to MSD wires, and get some new plugs (suggestions?) can this happen again? Or should I just have the plugs and wires replaced with factory stuff?

Shit, count your blessings if they're paying for it. who cares what they say as long as the warranty is covering it.

MSD or Magnecor wires will work, and a set of NGK BPR6ES (i think that's the part number) properly torqued in there will prevent it from happening again.

yeah sounds to me like he used the wrong plug with different threads or just tightened them too damn tight....should be able to just helicoil that....im guessing youd have to take the head off to do it...but if its paid for.... :thumb: and go with the bpr6es plugs....the oem wires will fit them...or if you want to upgrade the wires..go for it

is a helicoil a permanent fix or temporary? cause this same problem happened to my car, except mine is a 90 and not under warranty. also mine is making a loud clicking noise if i drive it...

bad business
