Ok, i have a 98 eclipse gs 420a non turbo... this car has been a long project thats finally coming together. I have ran into a recent problem and dunno what it is. Its more annoying then anything, My car when i first filled it up took gas fine then had this really bad gas smell i found it was a bad vent hose i was assuming. its down by the back driver tire next to the fuel tank. i touched it and it fell apart so i replaced it with a piece of heater hose that was the same size no kinks or anything. now when i go to pump gas i might get a buck or two then i gotta wait to put more gas in it. its filling up the neck then draining into the tank is what im guessing. i dunno how to fix it. is it a special hose maybe not just a piece of normal heater hose? any help would be greatful. if you need pics of the hose i can try to take them with my iphone and figure out how to post it.

maybe the tank vent system is clogged and you fixed the new "vent" by repairing that hose? now the pressure builds up to fast in the tank and kicks the pump off. I bet if you pulled the fuel nozzle out until it was just barely in, it would fill up just fine. I had the same problem after eliminating a bunch of the emissions stuff on my Evo and capping the unused lines. No vent caused the pump to kick off after a few seconds.

Your charcoal canister is most likely plugged along with your vent solenoid and or the hoses connecting them. I'm not sure where they are located on the NA but on the turbos they are on the right side of the firewall. Try unhooking the line from the gas tank to the canister and see if your problem improves. If so then your problem is from the canister on. If not the problem is from the hose back to the tank.

Fixed the problem after it finally annoyed me for the last time becuase it wouldnt take gas at all. i started ripping everything thing off around the gas tank to check for blockages. well i found none then putting think back together i broke the neck to the (roll over valve) so i took the one off the one car i dont have running cause i cant afford the new part atm. well i got to looking and the vavle was stuck in the roll over position.... not letting fuel in.
