I plan on a 262/272 or 262/262 combo or other companies variants for the car next year. I am looking for cams and there are a few options out there. My question is which cams can I use and not have to get cam gears? Also with either setup would I need better springs/retainers?

I am new to cams, thanks for any input.

HKS 264/272 cams seem to be the popular combo for adding the most power and still being very streetable.

Crower cams need adjustable cam gears, HKS do not.

I would look into that route.

Forced perforance sells there custom cams I believe from comp cams for less than HKS and seem to have great results so I have heard. Also you do not need adjustable cam gears for them. I would recomend stage 1 for a 11- 12 second street car. I would also recomend the upgraded valve springs and titaium retainers to go with any cam upgrade becuse of the increse ramp speed the cams have. Its a worth while investment.

I would like to here more about forced performance's cams they seem like a great deal, bettering idle and same power, so if anyone has them speak up.

that isnt entirely true. HKS cams do come ground better to spec than most, but still will need to be adjusted to get the most from them. Crowers tend to be more off spec than HKS, but still drop in, the crower 264/272 combo is suppose to be pretty close to spec.

I have HKS 264/272 (not that rough at idle), and love'em. Great increase (quicker)through out the hole power band (I also had HKS springs); and that was on my T-25. Now w/ my upgrades iwant to go 272/272, for mor power (bigger turbo). I heard great things about Comp Cams also. U really don't need Cam Gears unless u want to extract every single amount of power.

The comp cams have quite a high lift, and really require upgraded valve springs unless ur revving to 6k. Comp even highly suggest them. Also i have 272's, top end is awesome, i didnt notice any loss in low end on my PTE 50trim, and the idle is just about like stock.
