So lately I have been noticing some smoke coming out of my exhaust and that I am burning oil. I checked the compression yesterday and I got between 215-225 accross the board.

What are good compression numbers for the 420A and if mine are good, could I possibly have one or a couple valve seals that are bad? It lets out a decent amount of smoke only sometimes, I have noticed that it is mainly when I downshift to a red light.

I would like to know what it could be so I can replace it before I go turbo very soon. I though maybe it was my rings but now those numbers make me think it could be a valve seal.

Also, what are the best plugs to use in the 420A and 420A turbo applications? I know to 4g63 is NGK BPR6ES gapped and .028-.030.

Any help is appreciated.

Valve seals.

Those compression numbers are as close to perfect as I've seen. A leak down test will provide more in depth results and help pinpoint the exact location of the problem. Although, I'm nearly certain it's your seals.

Those are VERY good numbers for your car. Did you have a leak down test done as well or no?

As far as the oil goes, have you checked your gaskets lately?

I did not have a leak down test done and I really don't know what condition any gaskets are in except the exhaust gasket since that was replaced when I got a header. The engine is completely stock besides a CAI and header with 147xxx miles.

Which gaskets are key to check and can anyone answer my spark plugs question?

I guess it's time to look up how to do a leak down test.

I concur on the leakdown and suspicion of valve seals. Typical compression numbers tend to run in the 180-200 range on the older, healthier 2GNTs. If the smoke is mostly out to play during extended periods of idling - gridlock traffic, drive thrus, etc. - then it's likely valve seals.
