ok so i was trying to pull harmonic balancer damper what ever u want to call it. Using a three jaw puller, it wasnt going at all finallly gave it one last crank in it and heard a pop. Snaped one of the tabs of balancer. I have a 420a by the way. Then got on here and saw there a balancer puller tried that but only had 2 places for it to grab. Then i got a genius idea to just cut the balancer off so did that and realized it goes a lot deeper than what i originally thought. Any ideas i think i a screwed. By the way i am pretty new to the dsm scene. Help.

Does your puller have a bolt that goes in the crank to pull? If it does, hook up the 3 jaws then tighten the bolt as tight as you can but not super and hammer the head of the bolt. Tighten it up again and repeat with hitting the head of the bolt and it should just pop out. It'll take a while. It's a total PITA!

Edit: just read the bottom half. Is there any place where you can put the puller jaw on? If not then your screwed.

no, no place to grab so now i guess my question is whats the easiest way to pull thr crank i am planning on this being a project car so in no rush to get it back in the road does anyone know how deep the crank sits in the balancer. I think i am gonna have to cut balancer off completely hopefully dont hit the crank at all. Pulled motor any tranny with some helpp from my brother took most of the day i nvr pulled one b4 it was an experience. Where should i start with building the internals so many questions i have srry guys LOL.

if you are trying to remove the crack now.. you're gonna have to pull the engine out the car of course (if it already isnt)

can you just unbolt the oil pump and the rear plate behind the flywheel then the main bearing caps and lift the entire crank with the crank pulley and harmonic balancer attached out? or is the balancer in the way of the bolts that hold the oil pump on? is this a possible solution?

motor is out putting on stand today. Will try the oil pump and cap y were talking about. Will keep u guys informed thanks for the suggestions

got the balancer off. Cant get timing gear though frustrated the bolt holes in timing gear are tiny puller i got had bolts that were too big. Took a chunk out of crank with grinder oops LOL now gotta replace crank wich i was planning on anyway. Cant get flywheel off though any suggestions LOL. Thanks again:ohdamn:

My suggestion if you haven't done it is get a manual as a lot of the issues your having sounds like your using trial and error to get this apart.

so i finally have it all apart cant quite figure out how to upload from phone yet. Def need new crank and balancer timing gear is good. So thanks for the help now where would i get a new crank have no clue as to where to start looking sorry kinda clueless.

$10 @ harbor freight, ok and maybe $5 in gas being considerate - could have saved you a hell of a mess.

I'm still amazed at what some people do to their cars.:tease:

BTW I've gotten the most incredibly stubborn harmonic balancers off with this tool.

yeah but had only 2 points to grab the balancer off after 3 jaw puller like the haynes manual says to use broke one of the tabs. And yes i have a haynes manual wich is good for somethings but didnt go into near enough detail on other things. So as far as a crank goes any ideas i have only found one on ebay but say 95 - 96 was there a change in the block to 97?

ok well heres an update. Got the timing gear off last week. Found out the crankshft is shared with both the sohc and dohc neon from that time period so went to junk yard got crank oil pump and timing gear for 10 only cause didnt bring timing gear puller with me LOL. Now just waiting on bearings gaskets pistons etc.

I've never had to use a puller on mine. All I've ever done is take out the four bolts and it comes right off. Even when I took it off for the first time when my car had 80k it came right off.

i have been looking in junkyard and see a lot of the 420a balancer with a broken tab the 4 bolts i think is on the 4g63 if that was the motor i had would have been a hellof alot easier.thanks guys.

I also broke my pulley when trying to take it off with a wheel puller but found out i for got to lower the engine and it was up against the subframe. when i lowered the engine and the used the out sides of the pulley to grip with, it finally came off with no harm done to my crank :) I installed the new one (didn't seat it properly but that's another story.) and it eliminated alot of vibration i was getting before.
