brake issues

Well, lately i've been noticing some crazy brake problems. When i'm at low speeds, especially if in reverse, when i push the brake down, some times it only goes down about a centimeter before it feels like its bottomed out and my brakes let off some god awful grinding noise (not a squeel but an actual grind noise), as the petal pulses back and forth. It only does this at low speeds, and it is only about 1/3 of the time. Thanks to anyone who helps,

ok, thats kinda what i thought. Not to try and cop out, but i just bought the car so it was the previous owner who neglected the squeelers. Thanks for the help though
