okay, so im starting to rebuild my other car now, and im on the search for bearings..

first off, im having to rebuild the motor now since the dog ear broke off... and the motor was rebuilt about 3k ago... I was thinking of just having the block welded, but i cant get ahold of the old owner to find the other peice.. so i was wondering, could i get a new peice of iron and have an experienced welder fix it without to many worries?

If i cant do that, i have a block ready to be swapped into, and i was wondering DO i really need to replace the rod bearings or can i just reuse them?

another question.. piston rings, since they have already seated to the other block i cannot use them in the new one. I have ross pistons that are .020 over, and i was wondering do i have to get the chromoly rings or can i just get standard ones?

im sure ill have more questions later.

1. I don't have in depth knowledge on welding cast iron, but personally I would not do it.

2. Rod bearings are so cheap, I would replace them with a fresh set. Are you willing to lose a shortblock to save a couple bucks?

3. Same here, Anytime a new block is bored/honed, you need to get a new set of rings. These are the rings that I just put in:
EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts - ROSS Replacement Racing Piston Ring Set: 85.5mm Bore

i figured it would be too much of a hassle, and to big of a chance to take welding the block, so my backup blocks at the machine shop.

im in the process of ordering bearings, but i really dont know what sizes i need so that will be on hold until next week.

as for the piston rings, the ross set seems to be my best chance and overall good price, yet i still need to get notice from the machine shop on what sizes i need.

anywho, thanks for you help and im sure i will have more questions.

lets talk assembly lube, do you think i should go with the plain old stuff or would it be better to spend a little bit more on the royal purple stuff?

as for bearings, would it be bad for me to use topline main bearings, and clevite rod bearings? Would it be bad for me to mix them up like that?

the balance shaft eliminator kit i have is about 3k old, and what precautions should i take when swapping it to the new block? is it a direct swap or do i have to order new seals and whatnot?

Childs&Alberts makes the best assembly lube. Avoid the cheap crap from autozone and don't ever use the white stuff. Royal Purple makes good product, do a google search and see if its a repected lube with the v8 guys, if so, go for it.

Topline bearings are probally ok. Using different main and rod bearings doesn't matter. I like ACL alumi-glide, they're cheap, I bought ACL main and rod bearings new off ebay for less than $45 shipped. No complaints whatsoever.

thanks for the input, Im going to look for those bearings, probably ordering from extremePSI like all of my other stuff. Where could i get the childs&aberts assembly lubricant at?
