Bad smell coming from brakes? Something burning?

I recently noticed this happening with my car. If I drive it and have to brake often or if i brake hard, I can smell something burning from the front of the car. It smells sort've like a clutch. Could it be my brakes? My brake pedal also feels mushy and it feels like the car won't stop when I apply the brakes. Do I need new pads and rotors or could it be something worse than that? Please help.

You said it all,

you are using them often, they get hot, and you smell them. this would also explain the lack of braking force, once they heat up.

its normal. slow down.

you dont neccessarily need to replace until they either wear down, you feel like an upgrade, or they get horribly warped from your driving style.

Well it's a little scary because I'll press the brakes and the car wont stop the way I'm accustomed to. I certainly don't want to rearend somebody as a result of this. As far as warping goes, a friend noticed the surface of my front rotors was "uneven," so maybe I should upgrade...
