ok.. so my car started spraying oil out of the valve cover oil fill port the other day and im assuming its my piston rings because im getting a little huff of smoke while it idles.. out of the oil filler port and valve cover vent...the idle also sounds abnormal... i have yet to hook my laptop up to dsmlink to compare stuff to previous logs but not like that would help all that much in this case anyway.. i figured i would get a few other opinions befor i do anything but i plan on doing a compression test asap.. thanks guys!!!

Compression and Leakdown tests are a must.

Does it burn while driving? Or only at idle?

both.. i got off a freeway the other day and stopped and there was a nice cloud coming from under my hood... i turned my boost all the way down since to help prevent any extra blow by.... i was hoping it was my valve seals or something on the head that would be easier to get at...and so i can do some work while its off .. :]

Generally, puff of smoke at start-up only indicates valve seals. smoke while running usually indicates rings. However, there is plenty of other reasons that oil could be splashing out of the oil fill point. If the oil is pooling too much on the head (blocked drainage) the cams would be splashing oil everywhere excessively, possibly getting out of the valve cover gasket and onto your exhaust manifold, hence the smoke under the hood. I definitely agree with the compression and leak down test.

its leaking down the back and right side of the block.. i have already wiped it down 1000 times. nothings on the turbo manifold so were good there.... my friends bringing out a compression tool tonight for me so we will see...

a compression test might give you an idea but a leak test is a much better route it will tell you for sure if its the rings that are bad.

A compression test will tell you right away what is wrong. It will show up as to which cylender(s) are having oil passing issues.
