How much power will a stock DSM automatic transmisison hold?

The reason i'm asking is because i've just broken my 3rd 5 speed transmission and the car doesnt even have 300HP yet (it will soon). I've ridden in a couple of automatic turbo dsm's cars and they dont seem to be that much slower than a manual tranny as far as performance.

A lot. There are numerous sock auto in the 9's. All they have is a different torque converter.

And don't be discouraged by how much stall converters cost if you look them up.You got to realize how many tranny's people go threw dumping a manual at the track everyday.It tends to even itself out.My preference is auto's.I like driving manual on the streets but i don't want to be dumping tranny's all the time when i can build a auto that's just as quick maybe quicker and put that money in my motor rather then replacing my tranny every month.

I had a lovely little auto 98 that would REALLY haul! Never had one issue with the "Cog Box" but unfortunately, she did have issues with her crankshaft. :'( Sad day

The key to keeping the trans together is preloading it. This is easy with an auto since you can foot brake(hold brake and gas) it at the line and then just let off the brake when ready to go. On a 5 speed it is harder and abuses the clutch a good amount. You pull the e-brake handle, let off the clutch until the car starts trying to move forward and hold the clutch there. When ready to launch, drop the e-brake handle and let off the clutch.

I told someone not that long ago that i think the auto game someday.I'm not saying at this very moment is going to overtake the manual game.I see more and more people starting to see the hp game getting bigger,and aiming for higher numbers.As i see this happen i see people having to get built trannys and dumping more then a grand into a tranny.Then when it goes a few more grand to buy a new one that will hold up to the numbers there pushing.Where the auto's are running 9's with a 400 to 500 dollar stall converter like its cake.I think we are going to start seeing more auto's being built by our back yard drag tuners very soon.The only people that will be able to keep up with this growing hp and still having manual trannys that can hold it are people with sponsored cars and the one's who build them at there shops.Other then that people are going to start wondering why there paying as much as they did for the car for the transmissions to drive them.

I have an AT 2g and i personally like it. I live near the city and its always a nice drive when your not too busy working out your left leg while your trying to work the clutch and figure out what gear your suppose to be and plus its a breeze to drive. Now speaking in a racing sense, you will find out that having an auto will benefit you in a more consistant times at the track (everyone knows this) and plus i picked an AT car due to the fact there is no lifting off the gas to shift so u have an almost constant boost level. Now what i would do is buy another automatic from someone since everyone is ditching those for manuals and build a nice bullet proof auto on the side and put it in whenever you can. In my opinion autos are pretty tough the way they are now and i lvoe my auto, and most people are right you can make an auto just as fast or faster then a manual in about 90% of the cars out there.
