My flywheel is shot, makes sound on startup and when I shift drive reverse etc.

I took it to a tranny shop, they diagnosed it right away and had another car in there with the same problem, sounded exactly the same. The other car was a 1998 corolla, but its flywheel was missing a few teeth in various spots.

my question is how hard is it to change the flywheel, they quoted me 300 labor + parts. Should I give it a go myself or fork up the money?

ive never done work on my car yet with this much actual work, just basic broken part replacement (p/s pump, control arm, muffler) but what kind of tools would I need, or a guide would be really helpful. If I am dropping the tranny, would I just be better off putting in a shift kit in for my auto since i want to do that anyway, or would doing two major things at once complicate problems that may arise?

also, I am n/a going turbo after winter passes, should I go lightweight flywheel, new oem, or junkyard?

my current tools include jack and stands, socket wrench, assorted wrenches, screwdrivers and pliers :)

would I need a torque wrench or any other special tool?

would I be best off holding the tranny on a block of wood then raising the car after everything is unbolted, leaving the tranny on the floor, or raise the car then support it with the jack and lower it after?

The tools you have seem adequate.A breaker bar makes life much easier. If you want to install a shift kit then ya i would probably do it now while the tranny is out. Yes you need a torque wrench. You will be taking apart alot of the supspension. The flywheel bolts definatly need tourqued. Just get 2 or 3 friends to help taking the tranna out/in. I just put the tranny on a jack and jack it up in the car(sounds much easier than it is).

Deffinatly get a chilton.

I have no experience w/ lightened flywheels. but since you wil be only running around 10 psi iacant see it making a big difference.

Automatics use a flexplate to carry the ring gear for the starter, it weighs very little. You cannot get a lightweight flywheel for an automatic.

You should update your profile.

If you have a 4g63 engine its either a 6 or 7 bolt flywheel. I'm not sure about the 420a engines.

420a's have 8 bolts.
