Am I a WRX outcast now? :P

They do pop, its true. It just means your dropping in forged pistons, con rods, block guard, and an engine rebuild earlier in the process. Scratch that, the newer STi's already have forged pistons, my 05 STi doesn't. An EVO motor is stronger, but it doesn't have the torque for pulling out of slow corners the STi does. You want that torque, you need a 2.3 Liter, which again is a rebuild and puts you at parity with a rebuilt STi motor. However, the STi will still be able to safely rev higher than the 2.3 Liter but a hair less than the 2.0 Liter. There is no clear cut winner.

that and the fact that for some reason rebuilt 4g63 motors tend to last longer than rebuilt ejs. one big thing that scared me away and made me decide to sell the sti. too many rebuilds popping left and right. sti forums are littered with blown ejs, rebuilt and stock.

for me evos are easier to work on. ive worked on dsms for years and a ton of evos along the way. i dont mind tearing out a 4g63, but an ej, no thanks.

each car has its pros and cons. so yea, no real clear cut winner tbh.

I didn't read all the posts, but I'd say you lost most of us at.... "stage 1 to stage 2 upgrade"..........I wonder what my DSM is according to stages......Stage 14, 15,......20. Bah! :)

i hate "stages" with modding paths. stis just list them as stage 1 and 2 due to the cobb accessport tuner pretty much. stage 1 more boost and a better over all tune (off the shelf tune). factory tunes are TERRIBLE and CAN pop your motor. my sti felt like a dog on the factory tune. stage 2 is even more boost, better tune (OTS tune) and a downpipe back.

difference from stock to stage 2 is huge.

is around 400hp safe on those motors? i really dont know much about sti's but im really interested in picking one up instead of an evo.

theyre hit or miss tbh. ive seen a few pop at 300. 07-08 isnt a question of will it pop, it is when will it pop. they are more likely to, but the ej is really hit or miss. the 09s supposedly forged stuff, but ive seen a couple pop already on iwsti and nasioc.

ill need to do more research, i would want an '06 aspen white :) or pick up an evo and fight the temptations of modding the shit out of it!

Ahhh. just get used to it. I have had a 2ng gen eclipse then went to a 04 WRX and now I have an 04 Sti w/ everything for stage one except the access port and boost controller. By my knowledge all you need is an intake turboback exhaust and Bov and boost controller and your at stage 1. I considered an evo MR but the hp just wasnt there for me. They were both sitting at the dealer and drove them both, Just an opinion but anyone looking at both drive them both and your decision will be made. I also just picked up a 2ng gen rebuild. Not to diss cause i love dsm'ers but i feel like scooby people are respectful of the brand. I hate the hatchback Sti's and would wait till the newer ones, but u could always do what i did and what two years and trade it in on a 09 Sti itll depreciate atleast to the price you paid for the rex in the meantime. Good luck
+1 on the spark plugs. that sucks balls
Also even tho its a bolt on dont do a turbo back exhaust yourself, that might have been even worse than the plugs

They are reliable cars. Like any car you build though, Once you get ''serious'' you need to have enough available funds to keep up with the car. My 06' aspen white sti made 713AWHP, The car was one of the best handeling cars i've ever driven. Even when I bought it bone stock and drove it off the lot it handled and performed great.
