They do pop, its true. It just means your dropping in forged pistons, con rods, block guard, and an engine rebuild earlier in the process. Scratch that, the newer STi's already have forged pistons, my 05 STi doesn't. An EVO motor is stronger, but it doesn't have the torque for pulling out of slow corners the STi does. You want that torque, you need a 2.3 Liter, which again is a rebuild and puts you at parity with a rebuilt STi motor. However, the STi will still be able to safely rev higher than the 2.3 Liter but a hair less than the 2.0 Liter. There is no clear cut winner.
that and the fact that for some reason rebuilt 4g63 motors tend to last longer than rebuilt ejs. one big thing that scared me away and made me decide to sell the sti. too many rebuilds popping left and right. sti forums are littered with blown ejs, rebuilt and stock.
for me evos are easier to work on. ive worked on dsms for years and a ton of evos along the way. i dont mind tearing out a 4g63, but an ej, no thanks.
each car has its pros and cons. so yea, no real clear cut winner tbh.
