hey everyone i was looking on upgrading my rims from the rs 14 inch rims to some 16 inch rims my question was what is a good set of economical or cheap springs and shock or struts well the truth is i have no clue about any of it i know that i want to run 16 inch rims but do i have to replace the shocks and struts if i do springs an explanation and recommendations would be great thank you.

to change your rims to bigger rims "most of the time" you dont need to touch your suspension.
if your suspension is old, your struts are gone and it rides crapy, i say get a coilover kit befor rims.
you can always get the rims , see how it rides and how the wheel gap sits then you can go from there on a suspension upgrade.
my 02.

I would not recommend a coilover kit for an economical suspension setup if you are asking for suggestions on a spring/strut combo. As mentioned, you do not have to replace the suspension if you are just getting wheels. 16 wheels came stock as an option. If your suspension is blown and you just want new struts than you may be okay with some GR-2's and the stock springs. Depends what you are looking to gain.

I'm in agreement. But something else you might want to consider is that a spring/shock combo can be far more troublesome than an OTS coilover setup. They're getting cheap enough these days that they ought to be considered if the price difference isn't too great and you're not that interested in mucking about with multiple suspension components. Sure, a guy might say, "2?" but having purchased a spring/shock combo I'd have much rather stretched the bank just a tab bit further and purchased a coilover setup or at least Konis/GC's.

Also, it sounds like you are quite new to suspension, feel free to ask any off the wall question. I, and I'm sure others, will be happy to help out or just explain.

koni/gc is probably one of the best combos you can put on our car, now i know there are more options for 2gs than 1gs but what problems have you had with spring/shock combos that you havent had with coil over setups. Most coil overs are made in the same factory as all the other brands and badged for whatever company is buying them. In turn most coil overs and shyt and not really mean to be street driven. I know to many people that have blown out ksport/tein/and on and on and on...

This is my opinion maybe im wrong

A couple examples could be ride height and really taking advantage of corner weighting. Custom rates, instead of the poor rates had by many springs could be another.
I'm not sure if the examples of blowouts are sufficient reason to dismiss the option. That's just how I see it and I could be wrong, too.:D

I bet 5 percent of the people or less that own coil overs corner weigh their cars. ROFL

they typical coil over setups you see for our cars are shyt.. thats why they cost 600-1500 dollars.. If you want to start getting techinal with suspension you should be ready to drop thousands on coil overs alone otherwise your just getting mass produced chinese rebadged junk sold as the new latest jdm hawtnes.

your typical street spring drops the car less than 2" hr or ibach I think. for 80 percent of dsmers a spring/strut combo would give them what there going for.

there is a reason why typical coilovers for our cars are so cheap... and a reason why the ones i list below are not.

That's because the majority of people with coilovers are not experienced enough to take advantage of the benefits once the car is corner weighted.

Just get the wheels and don't worry about the suspension unless it's blown.

If it is blown, get some KYB GR2's or AGX's and a decent set of springs. I would stay away from a coilover setup because:
* You don't need them unless you spend serious time tracking or autocrossing and are willing to invest in having them properly set up in terms of height and dampening.
* They will be a bit too harsh on newengland roads.
* Since they salt roads where you live, they will corrode and probably seize up after one or two winters.
