Has anyone successfully put a 6 speed transmission into a 2g DSM? I was just thinking about it the other day and was wondering if it has been done. Seems like an idea worth trying, and if it is doable I wouldn't mind looking into it. Please don't say, "just stick with a 5 speed and call it a day",.

94-96 3000gt vr4's run 6 speeds. They are obviously a little bigger. You would probably have to shift the motor over a little bit and have custom axles made.
 
Yeah. That would be something good to have. I don't really like 5th gear on the dsms. Its too big (for lack of a better work). When crussing on the interstate, it almost feels as though the engine is asking for another gear beyond 5th. I just don't like crussing at 3000rpms. What is it? like about 70 miles or so? Don't remember well. My car is down at the momemt. But its somewhere around there. I would love to do at least 2000rpms on 70miles or so. I know its too much to ask but that would be great. Having a tallier gear as the highest gear would be great! Either 6 speed or 5speed. I read that the evo3 5th gear is taller (if I'm wrong at describing the higher gear as being taller please correct me) than the dsm 5th gear but not by much. Is it possible for someone to machine, build, create a much smaller, taller 5th gear? (much lower rpms yet higher mph). If a six speed transmission is not possible, can a 6th gear be installed in place of the 5th gear on out transmissions? Still, a six speed dsm would be very interesting to see. I wonder if anybody has done it?
 
Whats the tallest 5th gear available for our cars? I know that the evo3 is 10%. Does someone make a taller 5th gear than the evo3 gear thats used on these trannies?
 
You can get a 6 speed from either Albins or PPG, but they are race transmissions designed to be close ratio and not top end. I looked at both and the 5 speeds had a taller 5th then the 6th. Your options other then that is a taller 5th (Evo3). Once upon a time I think TRE made a even taller custom 5th for our cars but no longer sells it.
 
stock ratio on a awd is .666 the evo3 is .610. the old tre custom is .500. It is way taller. But they haven't made them in a few years. Maybe if we could get enough people together they could do another run of them. But I don't think that we are that organized.

Ya I checked out tres site. I didnt even see a section for eclipse/talons anymore. Only Evos and 3000gt. Bummer. I will look into a taller 5th.

At .500 what rpm do you think you would be cruising at around 70mph?
 
Forget PPG's unless your ballin, PPG's are a fortune (it would cost me over $5k to put PPG's in my WRX). I doubt the 3000GT tranny would work at all cause I'm pretty sure it has a wider bell housing. Another thing to take into account is that if you could get a six speed into a DSM the gears would have to be narrower (re: weaker). If you really want a six speed you could get a 4th gen. I've had one before, really nice Aisin 6-speed and very cheap to mod.
 
.500!! That would be one hell of a 5th gear!! LOL. I'd love that. To hell with a 6th speed. This would be great. Imagine having a much taller 5th gear! We need to have some form of a group buy. Something like a one time only. Have TRE fabricate one big batch for those that are interested and thats it. No more! Or do you guys think that shepard transmissions or jacks transmissions would do it? This should be a new option on their transmissions.
 
I personally don't shift into 5th gear unless I'm at interstate speeds. So this would be great for me.

On a 2gawd with evo size tires (235/45/17) at 70mph you would be between (2280 and 2300) I came up with 2289 if my numbers were correct.
 
I'd like to have a taller 5th gear as well. Group buys for the win!

I do a decent amount of highway driving myself, so this would be nice to have.
 
The fwds have a different ratio. I cruise way lower with my 1g at 70 then with my 2g...
