Edm,
2 days ago I got my exhaust system installed (2.5 mandrell bent with no cat). Soon as I started my car white smoke started coming out. A first I thought it was the coating inside the system. The problem has got worse and it smells awful. My car isn't running hotter, so it's probrobly not the head gasket. I just don't understand how I drove to the exhaust shop with no problem then when th exaust is done it's smoking even before I drove it. The exhaust shop guys didn't drive it either.

Please help!

If you eliminated the cat, you will see more smoke from oil getting by the valve stem seals. Mitsubishis of this generation have a high rate of failure for valve stem seals. Check your compression and if it is OK, then more than likely it is the seals.

Well I'm doing a compression test tonight.

What are the symtoms of valve seals vs piston rings?

I get alot of blue smoke when I start my car, and when I accelerate from a stop. I don't seem to be smoking much during boost.

4 months is not a long time. The seals should be good then. Perhaps the turbo? If you have good compression, it could be the oil control rings. ( Just a possibility, depending on the condition of the bottom end) I would check the intake tract for the presence of oil. If it is there then you have to figure out why.

well bad news, the smoke seems to becoming more of a blue colour. I looked in the intake and there is no oil, so it must be my pistons. I think i'll go for 2g pistons.

Sorry, didn't see that.

You know, it may be your rings.

I hope not :(

If it is, get some good pistons and rods. There are some decent prices out there.

Get a leakdown tester. They are at auto zone or oreillys or pepboys, whatever. It is a little adapter thing that is threaded to screw into your spark plug hole on one side, and the other side is a quick-disconnect valve so you can attatch it to your compressor air line.
All you do is for each cylinder:
get it at TDC.
take your spark plug out.
Attatch the leakdown tester to your airhose and screw it in your spark plug hole.
Put air through the tester into your cylinder and listen.

If you hear noise in the crankcase (under the valve cover, pcv valve, oil dipstick), then your rings are bad.
If you hear nose coming out either your Exhaust pipe or your Intake pipe, then your Valves aren't seating well.

don't send too much pressure into the cylinder or the engine will turn itself over.

Thanks for the help guys!
I will de a leakdown test but i'm sure it's the piston rings. The non-turbo pistons are beefy but very thin rings. It's not smoking all that bad i'm sure it's just 1 ring that's cracked.
