how do you tell if the slave cylinder is bad?

Leaking! It is a stupid machine so if it gets fluid pressure and not sticking it will work as intended. Try bleeding it and if it don't work then look into the clutch master.

k i figured. so when you pull the rubber boot off the slave cylinder should the inside of the bore like the inside walls that the piston travels up and down on be wet? damp? dry?

alrite but does fluid on the inside walls where the piston travels mean that the slave is bad?

also check your master cylinder and like jayrolla said def. go with OEM because my master cylinder when bad 4 times in a year because i got the autozone ones:(.

and you can tell if your slave is bad if you move the boot and there is fluid everywhere.

goodluck

so if i pull the boot off and put my finger in the bore and i feel the inside walls and if they are wet that means it is leaking and should be replaced?

o alrite because it was dry on the inside when i put it on. i put it on and bled it good then did a couple of pedal pump to feel how the clutch was then went back under and pulled the boot back and put my finger in it and fluid had soaked the whole walls of the slave. so i guess the piston blew out? any ideas on how this happens?

well its a autozone one and i have a stage two exedy clutch and fidanza flywheel in it so im guessing that is what caused it to blow out.

Ya, when you change out the slave, best to do the master as well. I had a slave go leak on me since the "O" ring on the piston had a small crack in it, thus I went out to a yard and grabbed a slave from totaled DSM for 5 bucks and it worked great.

Ya, NAPA is tonnage better than "Autocrapzone" - the "Walmart" of auto parts..so substandard.

It's a good place for off the shelf stuff, but stay away from the parts counter.

Napa parts are still not much better. A lot of times the other stores will get there parts from napa. Ive actually seen slaves and masters cylinders from parts stores fail within the first few pushes of the clutch. They have leaked right out of the box also.

the Exedy slave cylinders are not bad. We have been selling a lot of these at The Dsm Graveyard for for 19.99 compared to the factory at 59.99. I have been running one on my 97GSX with no probs with shep stage two trans and 2900 ACT with a street light flywheel. but i do agree with the NAPA/Autozone parts there good to have for a temporary fix and thats it.

Can I get some help here, I replaced my clutch lines with an STM SS master to slave line. and I tried bleeding it but once I do I can grab the slave cylinder rod and push it in to the slave assembly itself by hand so the whole thing feels numb. Im sure I am NOT bleeding it wrong so either the slave or master is toast. or any other thoughts? thanks.

more info: I took the clutch fluid reservoir cap off and when I push the slave rod in, the fluid level in the reservoir increases then by itself drops down slowly and automatically pushes the rod back to touching the clutch fork. I have my wife hold the clutch pedal down and only then I cannot push the rod in. as soon as she lets go its back to being a loosy goosy haha.

PS. Eagle talon 95, AWD.

nobody knows? damn. I'm going to replace the slave cylinder and I will report back in about a week.

This thread is old but figure I post here I just dropped in a 6 bolt in my 1gb wit new act clutch n flywheel and now I'm having issues I start to feel pressure about almost halfway down. And when I go driving it feels good and then it will loose pressure n just go in to da floor so I have to release n press again to get pressure back. Could this be a bad slave. And I also could push the slave rod in but won't pop back out on its own till clutched is pressed in. What can this be a bad slave. I do see oil around the slave but I believe to be motor oil as I have a leave believed to be valve cover but. Not sure or it could of been the fact one of my nut on the cas wasn't tight down enuff? Hoping is not from the hg under the t-stat housing. But yea I wana figure out my clutch issue unguys think is the slave.

I've always felt bet to just replace both at same time. 1st reason is removes the guessing game if you can't tell which one. ( If it's the Master it is under the dash above the clutch pedal and the floor will be wet from it leaking) 2nd I just like replacing things in pairs.

Just got to check this again thanks for the responds I really appreciate that. Well I supposably got clutch fluid from auto zone.nim guessing it might brake fluid advertised as clutch maybe. And master should b fine no leaks slave sounds like it could b ### the rod won't push back and since that easier to do ill try that first. Now what clutch fluid should I buy. And in case I didn't mention I also have the full master to slave from STM
