ok i came open a deal on a 94 eclipse gs. Its a 1.8 automatic but its so clean. it has good title and is in good shape but needs a tranny. so my plan is this. turn this 1.8 into a manual, 6 bolt awd car. i already have a full rear 90 tsi awd parts car but no motor or harness. i have the awd tranny front axels, all the rear just no t case or driveshafts. so i know i need the 6 bolt and the harness but can it be done. ps the 90 rear end is not a 4 bolt so i will probly change that to one. i wont to do this cause i got the car for 100 bucks and i need another project can i get a list of some things i will need to get it done. thanks

oh yea in the local junkyard there is a 91 turbo wireing harness auto. i am going manual but can i still use this and get a manual computer

Unless you do some major fabricating to the body,it can't be done. The transfer case and fuel tank take up most of the spare tire well that your 1.8 has,on an AWD there is very little spare tire well,if any,so the spare basically lays on top. On 2gs it's possible(correct me if I'm wrong)

dikdiamond you are correct. FWD to AWD conversions on 1gens are an extremely hard undertaking for the common gearhead. FWD cars have no driveshaft tunnel, different gas tank and location, completly different rear subframe(lots of cutting and welding). your better off getting a AWD car that has been stripped or something out of a wrecking yard.

I have a friend who tried this same exact scenario.. and he could not make it work for the life of him.. he ended up finding a 1g tsi for almost the same ammount he paid for everything to convert the 1.8..

At $100, I'd consider it a good deal on spare body parts & keep hunting for an AWD car to build up; that way you've got a good set of fenders, hood & such to swap onto a relatively solid AWD that has fender pinch or a kinked hood. There are a lot of things that can be used trim & body-wise from the car you have, but swapping the AWD stuff into it would be a waste of time & effort that would likely never get completed.

I would fix the transmission and sell it off to someone needing transportation that got decent gas mileage if the body wasn't any better than average; there's always someone out there who'll be happy to have it if it'll get them from "A" to "B"... ;)

thanks my new plan is to buy the nice 1.8 for 150. i just descovered a 1.8 auto tranny for 80 dollars at a junkyard im going to pull this weekend. im going to get it running and make a very nice profit around tax time in 08. the put that money with the christmas money i get which combined will make a very nice stack LOL. forge the my turbo 420a and be ready you go by this summer. thanks for the help anyways

The 1.8 1g autos are nice... and slow. Well they are slow, but they get good gas mileage. My girlfriend has one and while i'm used to my tsi, I like saving gas in hers. When gas goes up to 4 bucks a gallon, I'm sure someone will be willing to pay a pretty penny for it.

The 1.8s are also nice to work on. Nothing really cramped in the engine bay. Not even the timing belt(which is simpler in iteself). I'd rather work on hers than mine anyday.

Edit: forgot to mention, have fun removing the auto tranny. They are heavy!

it will be fun at the junkyard in 40 degree weather with no air pulling a tranny ha but i think it will be worth it

The 1.8 should come with a manual steering rack! :) I had to get mine off a 1.8, ugh, the pain.

Not all of them had it; there were a lot of fully-optioned 1.8 cars built. I have yet to get my hands on one that hasn't had A/C and power steering (most also have power windows & cruise). I've seen more base 1g 2.0 NT cars with manual everything & no A/C or cruise than 1.8s, but they've all had PS so far. :(

im set on fixin the 1.8 and selling it durring tax time. some one will wont one for the good gas millage. it does have power windows and locks. cold ac and ps.
