Hey. So I'm looking to get a cf hood. I will be putting hood pins on so my hood doesn't fly up (If you don't agree with installing pins Please Don't Post your opinions on this thread, Thanks). Now I would like to do put two in the front with ss cables (Do I have to custom make these?) and have two in the back that are normal locking. I was just wondering if anyone has done this and where a good place is to mount the two back pins to the body. Thanks. If anyone would like to post photos of their hood pins please feel free, just make sure you say what pins you have. Also please keep all questions about how to install pins to another thread there are plenty of them out there, Thanks.
Ian

i would say 4 is an overkill. i've had 2 different cars with CF hoods no issues with them flying up just gotta line up the hood latch properly on install (thats what i had to do anyways).

2 hoodpins up front will be more than enough to prevent this issue all together. with the hood being mounted to the brackets to raise the hood that should cover the back all together.

(hope that all makes sense)

4 hood pins are overkill, it will also be hard to pop your hood everytime you need to do something in the engine bay. Here is my hood pin setup...

You kind of contradicted yourself. And you won't need 4 hood pins. 2 in the front WILL do the job.

Yes I understand that four pins will be overkill but thats only if you keep the latches that lifts up in the rear. I am going to remove all that like what people do when they drag race. So I will need all four to keep the hood down get me?

Ok to make this clear for people like King. I don't care about how to install them in the carbon fiber hood. I would like to know WHERE to mount the pins NOT HOW. Thanks

So basically, you are converting from a 'bolt-on' hood to a 'pin-on' hood. As for where to mount the rear pins, just find a flat surface behind the strut towers and drill a hole. You can get under it to screw the nut for the hood pin bolt.

Yea thats what I was thinking. Later I was going to use rubber spacers to lift the rear of the hood a little bit to allow air to come out the back. I hear drifters do this on 240's to lower hood temperatures. I looking to do scca autocross.

Also DGajre777 do you have a photo of your hood open? I was lookin to place the front pins around where you have yours. Thanks

Haven't seen too many 'drifter 240s' with the back of the hood spaced up... seen a few Hondas with that done though.

It doesn't. The back of the hood, at the base of the windshield, is a higher-pressure area than the front of the grille.

^^^ Took the words right out of my mouth.

blacklabel5281 - If you are going to make your hood a "lift-off", then yes, you will want a pin on each corner. Use the radiator support for the front pin set. I'm not sure where to put the rears as I've never looked. Be sure to fully remove the rear hinges and front latch too.

with ss cables (Do I have to custom make these?)
Either make your own, or purchase a pin kit that includes them.
Mr. Gasket offers the cables in their kits.
Part # 1616 is with safety pins
Part # 1617 is with torsion clips

Pic attached. You will need to take the headlights off and get under the hood pin bolt and cut the extra length after you finish bolting them on.

Thanks speedmaster. Yea that’s what I was thinking about doing. Also I was thinking about leaving the front latch just so no one can rip the hood off and take it cause well it happens... my lowered 1500 truck was stolen a week ago in my schools parking lot at 2 in the afternoon with an alarm system activated haha...shitty I know. Lastly to defiant's response if there is higher pressure in the back of the hood wouldn’t it want to move to a space of lower pressure like the atmosphere because pressure moves from high to low. So by providing a crack in the back part of the hood it would allow air to flow right through. With pressure comes an increase in temperature so the crack would give the engine bay lower temperatures right? Or am I just bending physics to fit my thoughts haha.

O and Thank you DGajre777 for posting the photo of your engine bay. Thats where I will mount my pins as well. What do you mean by cut the extra lenght?

What most people think will happen is that the air will flow faster from the front of the radiator and engine bay to the rear of the hood and evacuate the heat better.

What really happens is, since the area by the lower windshield is higher than the front of the grille, the air reverses, going IN from the back of the hood towards the radiator. Since you're moving forward, there's also air coming in from the front. The result is stagnant, hot air under the hood, which means less flow through the radiator. I believe this is what Defiant means. He may be able to elaborate.

What is wrong with 2 pins in the front. It will just take 1 person to open the hood. With pins and no hinge you need someone to help you open your hood.
Now think of what would happen if your out driving by yourself and your car break on the road.

The hood is going to weigh 15ish pounds LOL I think I have enough muscles to lift that up and set it on my roof haha. I will however put something down so it does scratch. I still have to work on that part hahaha.

That hood pin bolt (with red arrows in the pics below) on all hood pins sets/kits and is too long. You'll need to take the headlights off to install them and then cut the extra part that sticks out from the bottom. You'll have 2 nuts to secure it, one from the top and one from the bottom. Everything that sticks out under the bottom bolt will have to be cut out for the headlights to fit back in (unless of course you prefer to drill into the plastic housing of your headlights, and have water go in them and short the bulbs out, which is not the way to do it). ;)

I like your hood.
I plan to get a vented hood as well.

Do not space the back of the hood up, it's useless.

You could mount the rear pins near the shock tower or closer to the firewall.

I went with just the two front ones. Some guys will do 4 across the front though.

Thanks! I used to have a heat shield on my 3" air filter, but when I upgraded to a vibrant air filter, I removed it cause it wouldn't fit. I've been driving around without a heat shield on the air filter and haven't had any trouble yet with rain. If it starts pouring, I plan to fabricate my heat shield and put it over my air filter to prevent water from going in.
