Okay so I have looked here and elsewhere online. But I just want something more specific to my car, needs and goals. I just got my first DSM its a 1999 Eclipse GS 5 speed with 18X,XXX miles on it. The guy I got it from doesnt know if the timing belt and water pump was replaced I'd think yes but I'm not sure so I plan to change that. I plan on changing all fluids too along with spark plugs and wires. I was just wondering if there is anything else I should change also best brands/types to go with. I just want it run as good as it can without a rebuild. Any other suggestions such as small performance parts and suspension will be greatly appreciated to! Thanks

Imo, do the maintenance, but don't do anything else, at that kinda mileage, save what you can for a new/rebuilt engine and transmission. Also if you do the timing belt and water pump, you may as well do the oil pump while you are in there.

Okay thanks for the great advice guys! Didn't even think about the oil pump. I did a compression test on it and its not perfect but was in range to be good but that doesn't really help me with the lower end. My friend has a wrecked 192 eclipse with 150,xxx miles and I read on here that they stopped with the 6 bolt halfway through 92. If it is a 6 bolt would it be better to rebuild that motor and put it in? Also does it bolt right up and can you still use a 2g tranny with a 6 bolt motor?

The tranny is a sealed unit right?

Woooi slow down. U want to put a 4g63 in. Do u know what thats gonna take... search the forms and ull find its not easy
I love my gs for daily driving but dont think the pain is worth the swap. You clearly need to di more research.

1) You can't use anything from your friends 92.
2) You can use a 6 bolt motor with a 2g transmission, just not a 2g N/A transmission.
3) Sealed as in non serviceable? No such thing, all cars have a way to check/add fluids, and bolts to remove and dis-assemble the transmission if needed.

My GS is n/a so no turbo. My friends eclipse is also n/a, I'm pretty sure its a 6 bolt also. The only reason I would want to switch is because of crank walk. I don't want to put all the time and money into a rebuild if I happen to get unlucky enough have it happen to me and I have very bad luck. I'm not completely ignorant when it comes to auto tech I know some stuff more then the next guy but I do more body work then anything. Correct me if I'm wrong about the swap and crank walk though, I'm not a 100% sure on it. For the tranny, that's exactly what I ment. The unit is sealed so you would have to disassemble to change fluid, I think. I'm not familiar with trannys really at all. I can change out them but that's about it. Anyways my main question aside from maintenance is is it worth doing the 6 bolt swap since I have one available? Again both are n/a and the motor runs great from the 92

Ok let me make this clear. U have a 420a engine mounted on the right side of the bay. 6 and 7 bolts are4g63 regardless of na or turbo. It wont fit without modification to the frame rails and mounts. And the one person known to do it spent thousands of dollors and had extensive welding skills. Just to make a gst that u can buy for less than u spent to make it...

No transmission on earth requires you to split the case to change the fluid.

Look at your friends engine bay and the impossibility of your question will become crystal clear.

Notice how your engine is on the opposite side, and it's an entirely different engine from a different manufacturer?

Sorry to be the burden of bad luck, but if you have a 2nd generation (1995-1999) non-turbo eclipse, it is a completely different motor than the 1st generation (1990-1994) cars. 2g cars came with either non-turbo 420a's or turbo 4G63's. If your car is a 2g GS, then its N/T motor is a 420a. The 1g N/T and turbo motors are both 4G63 motors. There is nothing alike between the 420a and 4G63 motor besides they're both 2.0 DOHC and or cars aren't Honduhs so there is no direct swap...

Ahhh thank you again guys!! I knew I was forgetting something, completely forgot that mine is a 420a. I figured all non turbos were the 420a I guess I never put 2+2 together ha. So forget doing all that, I did see a 2g gst on CL with a 6bolt swap for only 5k and that's what gave me the idea. Didn't think about the turbo vs non turbo par of it. Guess ill finish maintenance on it and work on internals for now. Thanks for the info on the tranny, wasnt too sure about it. Just once heard a friend talk about a sealed unit once and I kinda made up my own idea of what I thought it was haha. Oh one more thing, what's the hottest spark plug I should run? I'm pretty sure platinum is way too hot?

Two complete different cars, Turbo and N/A is not compatible for the most part :)

Standard copper plugs are what you want to run in these 420a cars. I prefer NGK and I believe the OEM ones are BKR-6 at gap .045

Also post some pictures (engine bay) up of the car so we can see where you are at currently.

My goals other then visual and interior crap ofcourse, would be to eventually build up the motor and eventually turbo it having it be reliable also. I know most ppl bash on doing this to the 420a but it is what I want to do. I'm not looking for a stupid amount of power either. Over 200 will make me content not really interested in more then 250ish though. Not looking to race it in any way other then just for fun on the street. I would also love great suspension, handling etc. I had an 04 RX8 and loved the way it handled, I know I won't get that from my gs but definitely would love to get within an arms reach of that as well. Pretty much I want to make it fast on a fair level and more importantly handle the best it can.

Constantine huh? not too far. not many of us in this area LOL.

by "visiual crap" everyone will tell you lower it, rims on it, high rise spoiler, and that's it. no body kits man, the 2g eclipse is one of the sexiest cars stock ever. haha.

The heat range of a spark plug isn't determined by the electrode element. The sole purpose of using Platinum or Iridium plugs is longer service life. The heat range is based upon how quickly the plug can absorb and/or dissipate heat.

However, you wouldn't gain much by running a hotter plug in a stock car. Just use the NGK BKR6E plugs and with a .045" gap. Any typical auto parts store should carry them.

Haha yes Constantine small ass town. There's a few eclipses running around but most are junk with fart cannons LOL. It came with a sweet carbon fiber hood, already has the high rise spoiler (a must!), and some decent rims. Plan to do some more cosmetic, but yeah def no body kit, I love the 2gb bumpers. At first glance I thought your avenger was an eclipse, thought about getting one of those aswell, love the body on those.

Ahh thank you. I thought that's what made it hotter guess not LOL. I used to work at NAPA and they told me to worn ppl about selling spark plugs because they burn hotter. Never trust an auto store! I'll just stick with the NGK ones then, Ive always used NGK in all my vehicles and always last. Should I go with bigger wires then or stick to stock??

WES_393 I'm really loving those rims! Usually only like 5-7 spoke but those just give it a clean high end look to them! What brand/type are they?

Not to revive a dead thread but, I'm in the same boat. Just picked up a 95 eclipse GS with 160k just change the oil, filter and plugs. The oil filter was way over tightened and and the oils looked like it was well into the ten thousand miles. Its still running alitte ruff. And I'm pretty sure the throw out bearing is going out. There is a whining rattle kinda a sound until you push in the clutch then it goes away. Any ideas.
