You can buy a new compression tester for about 20 bucks.
Pull all your spark plugs and make sure nothing hit them. That will give you the first glance into what your problem is. If your plugs are trashed (impacted something) you have issues.
Then, pull your timing belt covers and check over your timing and balance shaft belts for completeness as well as any wear. Spin it around till all the timing marks are lined up.
If the plugs are still good and the timing belt marks line up properly. Then you probably have compression. If you have compression on all four cylinders then it should start unless you are having electrical problems.
I've thrown a rod in a 2.8L GM V6 on the highway and it started out as a tick. Then, gradually got louder and louder till it snapped and then one cylinder went dead.
