i have a 1g :talon: talon dl with a 1.8 liter 4g37. The problem is my friends all have mustangs and corvettes which leave me in the dust and out of the fun. i was woundering what the best options are. i heard that moding a 1.8 4g37 is not worth the time because you may fry the weak pistons and i know that a 2.0 swap turbo or not would cost far more than my budget alows but if its my only choice then it will have to be. I dont want a hemi i just want to play with the big boys. tell me what you think the best option for a 1.8 owner is.

If you can't swap motors and you can't sell it and buy a turbo car and you don't have the money for custom mods like a turbo kit, then you will never be that fast.

Good point, our new Hyundai Accents make 104hp but only weight 2280lbs in the 5 speed gt model. Imagine what that'd do once you dropped about 200 lbs and got one of the bolt on turbo kits for it OMG , can you say upset sleeper city here I come ROFL

I can buy mods and or swap the engine. I just want to know if the 1.8 has any potential before i resort to a swap. :D

Every motor has potential given an unlimited budget. I think that for the cost of the swap to even a stock 4g63 you'd be better off than sinking that money into the 1.8 liter.

Hows it goin....Look at my name? LOL! I was once in your boat... Sell the car for something faster, or mod your suspension, tires, brakes, and then do a motor swap. I have a Talon DL with a built 6 bolt now...nobody knows tho :shhh:

Another 1.8 thread...

yes, it's has potentiol

in stock form, it is a non interference motor, big plus there, good for reliablility. It does have a relitivily strong crank and rods. It's a cheap ride to find, and usually arent in too bad of shape and are usually stock.

Downsides:
high(er) compression
weak ring landings
no knock sensor
no aftermaket parts besides intake tube
no blow-thru setup out there
everything will be custom

right now it sounds like my two best bets are to 1 sell the car for a turbo car or 2 swap the engine for a 4g63. considering time and money which of the two would be the esiest?

i found my 4th and favorette option i keep my car and find another car with a 4g63 for cheap that has been in a slight accident ( Body damage only). this way i will have my 4g63 and all its components for a fraction of the cost and i will have my nice body and chasie to put it in. what do you think of this option?

I would personally, save up the money to buy a GSX or a TSi. You will own people on the street with the AWD, it will have more factory options than your current car, it will be easy to mod, It will save you a TON of headache on a motor swap and you'll be tearing up Mustangs in no time.

The difference being, is that the guys in the Mustangs drive home, whereas you get luxury treatment on a flatbed.

The biggest problem that you will face would be not being able to find parts. Everything would be custom making it cheaper to have a swap or something done.

The 1.8l is a very dependable car. I just rolled 250k on mine and it still gets me to work every day, and when it does break down the parts are relatively easy to find and inexpensive. With the money I saved because of the 1.8l I was able to get a 2001 LS1 Camaro (and still had money for mods) just to play with. I can mod the Camaro all I want without having to depend on it to get me to work, and when I pull up next to a DSM at the light, I have no worries about them running off and leaving me... :thumb:

Keep your 1.8l DSM, Save your money, After a year or two buy whatever kind of sports car you want. You really don't want to depend on a 'race' car to get to work or school. Sports cars DO break and when yours does you can still get to work in your 1.8l 'Daily Rider' DSM...

yeah, the 1.8's are dependable. they get you where you need to go, as long as you're not in a rush :p

never had a problem with mine in the 6-7 years that I owned it. then again, I only put 113k miles on it.
