So I'm about to purchase A 1997 GST, or was at least thinking about it, but I wanted to get your guys opinion first.

It's a GST that crankwalked. Do you guys know when they fixed these cars, did they replace the whole engine or just the crankshaft and bearings usually? Would they have put in a refurbished rebuilt 1997 engine or a later 1999 block?

This work was done by the dealer probably under warranty. I realize this is all guess work, but I thought I would ask if anyone here had an idea. What are the chances of it walking again?

I have searched...but I wanted more of a specific answer about what type of repairs usually were done...and what the chances are it got a new engine more resistant to crankwalk...aka 1998 or 1999.

1997 is when they changed the throwout bearing design.

If you have a new engine it is a 50/50 they changed to the new throughout bearing. If the "new" engine has over 60,000 on it your probably safe, the usually cranked walked around 40k and it was really quit rare. Not ever dsm built then did it, not even 20% did it. It was just catastrophic when it did happen and people made a really big deal out of it.

If its been rebuilt already with that many miles I wouldn't worry about it. To check though have someone crank it up and push the clutch in and out why you watch the harmonic balancer for any back and forth movement. Also make sure when you let off the clutch the pedal doesn't stick any that is usually the first sign.

Thanks guys. I'm not gonna worry about that issue then. I know its much more rare than the internet leads people to believe. I was just wondering if there were any ex/current mitsu employees here that knew what was generally done.

Thanks.

Check compression, turbo shaft play, end play in crank, wheel bearings, tie rods, any CEL's...
