ok, ive read a couple of places where guys are sayin they use a 2nd gen sesnor on a 1 gen beacuse its not a sensetive. can this be done, i asked a guy i know and he said they read differently so dont waste my time, but im tuning for no knock and one run there will be none, and right back to back, ill make another 3rd gear pull and it will knock like crazy (like anywhere from 8-14) is it my sensor or can a just switch to a second gen? and this is on 15-16 psi btw. ive checked for the "goo" and mine is in good shape and its tight. any info?

It won't work because the 2g sensor is a lot more sensitive to knock. The 1g ecu would see all of the knock and just pull a bunch of timing.

If nothing else, RoadRace keeps 1G knock sensors in stock, if you want to be absolutely sure.

To be able to run a 2nd. gen. knock sensor on a 1st. gen. you will need some type of engine management system(such as the AEM EMS) that will let you define the knock sound.

They work differently. the 2G knock sensor is a simple 0-5v sensor that reads noise. the noise is filtered via software and I think, but am not sure, part of the ECU circuitry. It is translated into knock event counts and is accumulated to a sum. the 1G sensor has a filter in itself, and delivers it's signal to the knock board, and the knock board supplies the ECU with a yes or no each cycle. If it gives a yes the knock count incriments, if it's a no, it decrements according to the decrement rate in the code.

Unfortunately, with the way the stock ECU works, Niether will tell you the actual magnitude of a knock event, rather the volume of knock occuring is reported instead. Good for knock retard, but not ideal for tuning. You could have 40 counts of noise, or 1 count of deathblow detonation.
