Hey everyone. I have a good question for you. I have some after market cams and adjustable cam gears. I timed my motor and everything went great. Only thing is the cam alignment is of. Only by half a tooth. It's how it was when it was running before I believe. Just was wondering what you have to say

If everything is mechanically correct and, as you say, is all good; then I say your head and or block have been decked.
 
Well I just replaced the head because the valves were bent by some jackass that worked on it after the harmonic balanced broke and f***ed the timing. I was just seeing what people had to say on here before I started trying to crank the motor. Don't want to replace the head again. And spent two hours trying to time it but that's the closest I could get and it's barely off by half a tooth.
 
after i set timing i usually hand crank the motor a couple times to tighten up the belt then check timing marks..as long as there is no binding or unusual noise while doing so it shouldn't hurt anything. plugs out so easier to turn
 
I think it is likely that the offset is from decking the head or block. But I have also noticed with my car that the cam marks look off when looking down into the engine bay. Use a straight edge lined up from Cam bolt to cam bolt to verify that they are off. Sometimes it just appears they are off because you can't look at it straight on.
 
I don't like where the dowel pins look to be. There are lots of junk adjustable Cam sprockets out there hat didn't account for the difference in the cam timing between the intake and exhaust but it looks like the dowels are at 3 and 9 if they are even installed.

What's chewing up the teeth of the sprockets?

OH man! Good eye! I totally missed that on my first glance of the pic.

@Purplegstslut your timing is WAY off. @steve is right....the dowel pins MUST be up. If you look in the pic there are 2 timing marks on each gear. The one with the "zero" or circle and line and then the one with JUST a line. You are using the circle line which is the timing mark for the gear ONLY. The other timining mark is for you belt/head/block to be in alignment.
 
You'll need to retime the belt. You confused the cam adjustment indexes for the timing marks.
The dowel pins should be up at 12 (intake) and a little past 12 on the exhaust. The two timing marks should be aligned with each other and the parting line between the head and rocker cover.

Re-time as others have said and I believe the FAQ says to hand crank 6 times and let it set, at least that is what I did..

Alright so I appreciate catching the gears being pretty off. I fixed all that. Everything is at its proper mark and I cranked it by hand many times yet this is still the closest I can get the cam gears aligned. It is literally only half a tooth if even off.

That's because they are defective. As I mentioned earlier there are lots of cheap versions in the market and this is one of they ways they are failures. Notice the timing marks They are on the center of the tooth on both when the actual marks on the OEM sprockets have one mark on the tooth and one the valley like this.

Based on the image from the FSM 4G6X Overhaul manual it looks like the correct valley is the one above the line marked on your sprocket. So it looks like you got the belt timed correctly now.
