I just got a new to me 96 talon awd and the abs light has been on constantly since I got it. Even had no battery for 2 weeks and still when I slapped a new one in it came right back on and stayed. I have ripped the carpet out to get to the abs relay and when i turn the key I can definitely feel it click on and off, so I know that at least works. I dont get the pulsing light the service manual states should happen. Just a constant light. I tried the abs light code trick on here and the rest trick but neither worked. So I think it may be the ABS computer but are there other relays to check except for the ones in the relay box my the MAF? What do I check next?

Just checked resistance of the wheel sensors at the abs ecu connector and get 1.12k ohms across FR and RR and 0 across FL and RL. So the left side of my car is bad LOL?

It could be the sensors, or the wiring, or the rings. pop the wheels off and test the sensors directly. also make sure the tone rings are there.

Its not really easy for me to pull the tires off since I live in an apartment and dont have much room to jack stuff up, but I will try and get to that this week. I really think it is something other than the sensors though, since I dont get any flashing or anthing, as soon as I plug in the abs ecu the anti lock light just comes on and stays on. I already ordered a working abs ecu off of ebay for $40 just because it was a good deal and that will not break me. I can poke and prod and test any wires though so I will keep doing that.

Autozone has a free scanner which will tell you why your ABS light is on. Anytime I have an ABS or CEL light, I go there and borrow their scan tool. Its most likely a wheel speed sensor.

ABS sensors are expensive and almost always rusted in place. Just pull the light out of your gauge cluster.

Thanks but I guess I forgot to mention that I would like to fix this problem, not ignore it. What do they cost $150, $200? If I need one I will buy it. That is worth properly stopping in the rain to me. Much cheaper than another car.

Have you tried blinking out the ABS code(s) on the dash?

Ground pin 1 of the OBD 2 under dash plug to chassis ground (or just connect it to pin 4 of the same connector) and then turn the ignition lock to on. ABS light should blink out the code. Count flashes, # of long flashes is the first digit, # of short flashes is second digit. At least on my 98, plugging in a datalogger to the OBD 2 plug also causes the light to blink out the code.

I have tried and didnt get any blinking but I will try grounding pin 1 to pin 4 to be sure. All I have is a solid on anti lock light.

If by chance one of the sensors is bad, find someone parting out or contact GARYMITSU or stangmurdera to see if they can get you one.

I will say that a left sensor will fit a right wheel (2g rear) and vice versa. You will have it upside down but the wiring is only 2 wire which you can splice in and it will work like factory. Had to do it with mine.

Just a thought in case you cannot locate the one side you would need IF you need one.

Cool thanks.

I just tried looping pin 1 and 4 of the OBD II connector and got no blinking anti-lock light, just constant on like always. I have ECMlink in the car and even tried their simulate grounding diagnostic pin and got nothing there either.

That means you have the bastard child early 2G ABS controller then.
I honestly don't have any idea how that one works, you might even need a MUT II reader to pull the codes from it, I've never heard of anyone sucessfully reading one of those units.

That sucks to read. Well I ordered another ABS ECU from a same year awd talon, with the same part number as mine MB863949. Hopefully it is just the ABS ECU that is bad and this other one will make everything work. On the other hand if the problem persists then I will have eliminated the ABS ECU!

Well I kind of feel dumb, but after further investigation it looks like the top of the ABS Hydraulic Unit Relay box is smashed up and at least one coil is showing and rusted, so it is no wonder this thing dont work. Anyone know the compatibility of the hydraulic unit between years and models? I have a 96 talon AWD btw...

Well I replaced that relay box and got everything back together, and now I just get the quick flashes like it is doing its diagnostics, and then I get a solid abs light still. I checked all wheel sensors and they are in place with no broken wires. I also tried sticking another abs ecu in there for the heck of it and I still get the light. Is my only option to go to a chrysler dealer and get it scanned?I also have a recall I noticed from carfax for LOWER LATERAL ARM BALL JOINT, but its from 2001. Can I still get it fixed today?

so will the ABS code scanning work when the light takes a little bit of light driving to come on? Mine comes on when i start the car and goes off right away, then after driving over like 15 mph it kicks back on. My guess is a speed sensor but I'm not sure which one it would be.

A solid ABS light after rolling 15 feet is almost always one of the four wheel-speed sensors. Yes, the grounding trick (or a MUT-II) will tell you which one.

I hesitate to suggest this, but seeing how I have actually run into this one...

Make absolutely sure that the DPO did not replace an ABS-ring-equipped axle with an axle without the ABS ring.

No really, honestly, I have actually seen this.

Verify you have the toothed ring on all four axles, in the correct place.
