Does a Galant VR4 ECU work in a 1G?

Hi all,
I couldn't find the answer searching anywhere else, so I'll try and just ask.

I have an ECU from a 91-92GVR4, does anyone know if is this swappable w/ my 1991 TSI FWD?

I Think they will work.
I had a jdm galant ecu in my 91 awd, and let a friend borrow it for troubleshooting in his fwd, and it ran fine.

What aspect of the awd ecu do you think doent work on fwd? the overall archetecture should be the same.

I had heard from a guy online saying he was running a GVR4 ECU in his 91 FWD DSM, but this was all online, and the first I heard of it.... , and not from a DSMtuner member, so I wanted to ask here

It should work I think, because people have swapped FWD and AWD ECU's in the past, providing they were MT ecu's.

The GVR4 has a few differences from a DSM that impact us. Their MAF doesn't have a lower passage so it's outputs lower AF HZ than a 1G. The 1G MAF connected causes the GVR4 ECU to think more air is flowing than actally is. Second issue is the GVR4 has a higher idle speed. If you don't adjust your BISS for the higher idle your ISC will be misadjusted. Last issue is the case mounting is different.

I have to pull about %20 when I test GVR4 ECUs in my car to get them to go closed loop and sometimes I can't keep them from surging. The good news is most if not all GVR4 ECU's are EPROM so by changing the chip with a DSM one or modded chip it will work exactly the same.

So Ackerson is partually correct. The ECU will work but has issues.
19Eclipse90 is just way off the mark. There are slight differences in the FWD .vs. AWD code paths but not so much as to sigificant. Much less difference than between the GVR4 and DSM code.

I was not aware of those differences, I guess that's what i get for being ignorant. I had a 2g maf and safc when i tried out the gvr4 ecu maybe thats why i didnt notice any difference. The car still ran the same and everything on the datalogger looked the same. Thanks for the info Steve

what are the awd fwd differences? im looking for an ecu, and on www.mitsubishiparts.com they dont list an awd ecu (ecm) at all for the 1990 year.. i know the 90 is different from the 91-94,...i just need to know if the "ecm" listed there for the fwd turbo works on my awd car and is an ecu...(never heard the term ecm before,...well i think i have, but i dont trust my thoughts that much...)

What you want is a MD145903 and no that site can't pull that number up. (Nor can any other site using trademotion's flawed database)
You aren't considering buying one from a dealer are you? I'll be happy to sell you a nice '90 AWD ECU for discounted dealer prices.

Ditto! I also NEED to know this as i may be purchacing a 92vr4 but the ecu i THINK is bad. If i can, could i just use a 1g mas to compensate, or just throw my 1g maf-t on?

Oh yea, I think its bad because it wont turn over. Its llike there's no spark but i put one of my cp's and transistor packs on, and still nothing :-/
