I was reading something on the web and they said you could put 2.0 cam gears on a 1.8 can any one give me some more information on that subject?

No. The 1.8L only has one camshaft (Single Over Head Camshaft) while the 2.0L has two (Double OHC). They are completely different head designs to account for the 8 valves in the SOHC and the 16 valves in the DOHC. They are in no way interchangeable.

I understand they are different size and have different amount of teeth but what would happen if I was to put one on

You really need the answer to this after we told you it doesnt belong there? LOL

Are you asking about the sprocket for the timing belt? I thought you were asking about the camshaft itself. See proper responses below for the cam swap. As far as different sized sprockets go...

Why can't you use the different sized sprocket? Suppose you find a belt that allows you to use this different sized sprocket -- using it will change the mechanical timing of the engine's internal components. The camshaft(s) turn so many times for a single turn of the crankshaft for any engine. This ratio is maintained by the crankshaft sprocket and the camshaft sprocket(s). Changing the size of one sprocket changes the ratio. Since the 4G37 is a non-interference engine, you don't have to worry about banging pistons into valves. However, (assuming you could correctly time the engine initially and it did somehow run) you would have valves opening when they weren't supposed to, causing very poor performance.

took the words right out of my mouth.

uhm...actually po yes you can use it...

ive personally used one and so has a couple of people i know locally here...it can be used...i guarantee 90% of the people on here havent even owned a 1.8

so yes you can...but the gear has to be milled a little bit and you do get a benefit from it...the gear is lighter by almost a full lb

I too have personally ran a 2.0L Cam gear on a 1.8L because they are about half the weight possibly less then the 1.8's cam gear. there is slight modification required to the timing shield behind the cam gear in between the head. I just removed mine. but if you want to leave it on, you have to shave down the heads of the bolts otherwise the cam gear will get caught on them.

If you want a little bit of joy (what little you can have) out of the 1.8L this is one modification I would recommend.

I however would recommend Low boost w\ a 14B and run it till it blows up LOL. then swap 4G63T

1gdsmftw what is all involved in put a 2.0 cam gear on the 1.8

Read more carefully.

as blackmount stated...its as easy as just pulling it off the 2.0 cam and putting it on the 1.8 cam

AFTER

milling the camgear down a little to make it easier to fit the belt on without over stretching....and modifying the sheild...mainly just shaving the bolts heads back a little...which u could ###### just get thinner headed bolts if u can find them..

if u want a ton more info on the 4g37 i suggest heading over to </title><link href="/skins/mb/black_glass_look/black_glass_look.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"><style> </style> <title>dsm1eights

i am on that site as a supermod and a few other members on there have done just about anything that can be done to a 4g37...including boosting them
