Hi,

Having successfully done something stupid to my alternator (don't ask), I'm researching the possible alternator options for late 2g turbo DSMs (direct fit, or close to it; I don't have the necessary tools to fabricate a custom mount for an alternator for another application). Corrections to the following are welcome; I'll try and detail what I've found so far for 1g and 2g applications, both turbo and non-turbo.

So far, I've found out that the GVR-4 and Canadian DSM models all came with a 90A alternator, which is apparently a direct swap for a typical 75A 1g alternator. I've also found out that 1g and 2g alternators are not interchangable, due to wiring and internal design differences.

Just about every parts store (NAPA, etc) seems to carry a line of remanufactured alternators at the stock (75A) output for cheap, occasionally with a lifetime warranty. From most reports, the lifetime warranty is important: they tend to have an extremely high failure rate.

OEM replacements from Mitsubishi can be pricy, but they seem to be generally regarded as bulletproof, or at least better than the average remanufactured/rebuilt stuff. Mitsubishi also offers the individual components needed to rebuild your existing alternator, if you have the time and the tools.

I came across AlterStart, who sell a higher-output (135-amp) alternator for all 1g cars, and a similar one for non-turbo 4g63s.

A little further searching revealed that a lot of people stock non-turbo 2.0L 2g alternators (for example, NOPI carries a very nice 160A Bosch alternator for non-turbo applications). I assumed they would have been the same; from the pictures I've been able to see online, they sure look like mine.

So, this leads to a few questions:
  • What are most folks with turbo 2g DSMs doing for aftermarket alternators, preferably with higher maximum output levels?
  • Can anyone explain the incompatibility between the non-turbo and turbo 2g 4g63 alternators?
  • Am I stuck with the stock alternator, because only the non-turbo folks are putting massive audio/visual systems in their cars? ;)
Thanks in advance for any ideas you might have.

GOOD NEWS!

Alterstart Systems Inc of Dallas http://www.4alterstart.com/ also makes a 150amp alternator for the 2G Turbo Eclipse. I spoke with Bobby and he quoted me $249. Not bad for a 150amp 2G alternator! He said that they start with NEW alternators and then rewire them. They will require a 4guage recharge wire to handle the extra current.

I'll let you all know how it works when I get it (he promised order by noon, shipped the same day).

My alt. is putting out about 12.9-13.1 and I am starting to have problems with my battery.
Any new info would be welcome before I go out to pepboys and get a stock replacement.

well after using google I came across a site called www.rockauto.com in their catolog under 1999 MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE Parts ECLIPSE 2.0L 1997cc 122 cubic inch L4 FI Turbo [4G63T] they list the following:
World wide Part # 14257 90 Amps
ACDELCO Part # 3211722 Generator 90 amps
Are these the ones for the 1g cars listed in the wrong place or what?

maybe those are for Canadian Talons or something.

Are the 2g turbo talon canadian 90amp alternators wired the same as the 2g turbo eclipse 75amp alternators, amp diffrences aside?

Would it be a direct fit just changing out some fuseses or would I be cutting and splicing harnesses only to get it installed and have it not work due to internal diffrences of the alternators and or wiring diffrences of the two cars charging systems?

Any ones input would be welcome.

The "Canadian Talon" alternator is the exact same thing. I dont mean it fits the same, I mean its the exact same thing. All the "75amp" USA alternators really put out 90amps, but they're rated at 75amps to match what the factory spec called for. The Canadian Talon called for 90amp because of the daytime running lights. So everything is exactly the same. Any 2G alt you get will put out 90amps, so dont waste your time looking for a Canadian one.

Alterstart: screw those crooks. Me, as well as another 2G owner in NYCCDSM got their high amp alt. Mine lasted 4 months, his lasted 2. Started charging low (running off battery at idle, slowly took more and more RPM before it would start charging) I sent it back to them "there's nothing wrong with it" and sent it back to me. I put it in until it got worse and was hardly charging at all, send it back to them a month later. "Ok we put in a new rectifier" and sent it back to me. Still would not charge at idle (12v running off battery) and wouldnt start putting out more than 12v until 1.5k rpm. Then in a month it was up to 3k rpm again. Took it out and took it to a local alternator repair, and my expensive 140amp alternator was really only putting out 90amps all along. Sent it back to Alterstart "theres nothing wrong with it we're sending it back to you" when I told them its discharging the battery at idle and doesnt put out over 13v until 3k rpm they say "oh thats normals that what you need to get 135amps out of it" "uh, then why is it only putting out 90amps" "its normal its your car we're sending it back" "then why is another guy with the same car with your amp having the same problem? why was it putting out 13.5v at idle when it was new and 14.2+volts at anything over 1k rpm? why did it get worse?" "we're sending it back... bye".

Fukem.

my friend has a dodge stratus and the car is exactly the same as my eclipse i get inside it and i think i'm in my car but to the point has anyone thought about using an alt from a stratus??

Not sure if those part numbers are right, but rock auto has messed up my orders before so I would call and confirm before ordering from here...good luck.
