I have the chilton and haynes books.
I have a cruist control car. I am trying to adjust my clutch it seems to have the problem with pump up bad and also not grabbing like it should.

I am still really mixed up. My pedal measured about six inches off the floor. So far think have it like 6.5 but not sure can get 7 to 7 and 1/4 like the haynes says. And not sure if raise it up that high can get the freeplay at the top I need to let the pressure bleed off so don't get pump up.

Is the 7 inch spec a mistake? Should it be six maybe is it misprint. I am not sure there are enough threads to let it go that far up and it would not be level with brake pedal I don't think not sure its supposed to be.
And is it also a mistake it seems to say that the cruise switch affects how far the pedal is out but that don't seem to affect it at all it only seems to affect maybe the freeplay for the top mostly?

I am still very confused . I just want to set the pedal height and set the freeplay so don't build pressure and hurt my new clutch. Hopefully havent' already.

I read the rre page it don't even give specs. I don't think the 7 inch spec is right.
I think its a mistake..anyone got the mits manual or cd to verify ?What I did for now is adjust the cruise control stop for lots of free play maybe an inch..will this hurt anything
And trying to set up clutch for about middle of the travel..

The height is somewhat irrelevant as you can set it to almost anything you like. The trick is to simply avoid pump up and provide proper throw. I don't know anyone that does this by measuring from the floor. First, becaue the measurement values are inaccurate, and wear of the hydraulics and pedal assembly can still cause pump-up issues.

If you move the cruise stop up very much it will make it quite hard to daily drive as your clutch pedal will now rest higher than the brake and gas. With the limited space between the steering wheel and seat this becomes a leg / wheel interference problem.

Adjusting it for release at mid pedal height is also something I never strive for, as this could mean you aren't getting enough throw to fully disengage and still have enough play to prevent pump up as the car warms up. Personally I just deal with the engagement point wherever it is. It depends a bit on clutch design, clutch wear, and flywheel step height. However, the friction point is *somewhat* adjustable, just not adjustable to anywhere you like.

You are correct that spec doesn't seem right, my car is more like 6" as well. What you want to do is adjust the top stop (cruise control) to be level with the brake pedal. Then adjust the rod so the clutch just starts to engage about 1/3rd the way off the floor. With it adjusted here there should be more then enough travel to fully disengage the PP & prevent the pedal pump. You don't want it to engage right at the floor or you will probably have shifting issues. Just make sure the master & slave aren't leaking and make sure it bleed properly. I've found it works best to bleed the slave by pushing in the slave rod, then bleed the master/whole system with the pedal after.
