FWD guys running slicks..... couple questions.

One of my boys runs 8.5" wide slicks,at 12psi on his GST.

on my old eclipse rs-turbo i used to run a 22x8x15 mickey thompson slick on weld racing 15x7 rims with a 42mm backspacing (sorry i dont know inches) and i brought it down to 15psi

I think dsmtrance(I think that's his name he has the 1g with upper 400hp) might be running a 10" wide slick. I will be looking into that wide of a slick after getting tuned because I will need some way of putting all the power down. I have yet to figure otu what backspacing I will be running but a 15" rim for sure. The problem I can see with running a 10" wide slick is the fact that the tire will be sticking quite a ways out from the car and people with lowered cars(how much of a drop I don't know) might have issues with rubbing. Also what height slick will you be running.

Zach - Thanks for the input. I just got off the phone with Mark @ SBR and he said I'd probably be better off with an 8". He said that if my car is lowered (which it is, 1.5") that when the slick swells, it might hit the fender. My fenders are fiberglass, so they are not forgiving. I have all sizes of wheels and slicks in stock here where I work. I just have to decide the best combination of sizes and prices. I'm pretty sure I have it narrowed down to the following:

Mickey Thompson slicks: 24.5x8x15
Aero Race Wheels - 15x8 4.5" backspacing. weight = 21 lbs. It's not the lightest wheel, but they are only $28 each, so I'm happy.

I have a stock 1G talon swirl wheel in my garage and I just went home on my lunch break to measure the rear spacing on it. It was 5.5". So this slick set-up that I have in mind is going to stick out a little more than a stock wheel would, but it still should clear the fender OK.

Does anyone run tubes in their slicks anymore?

Seems like you got the info you needed. I was going to reccomend an 8in slick as well

where did you find those wheels?

They are circle track wheels. They are tipically used on alot of the NASCAR, IMCA, ASA, and late model team cars. They are perfect for anything or anyone in need of cheap wheels. :thumb:

I am a salesman for a performance warehouse, and we do alot of circle track stuff. So, naturally, I keep alot of these wheels in stock; so that's where I got them. ;)

no problem bro, have you dynoed your car yet?? I for some reason thought you still had the 14b on there. Looks like you got yourself a really solid set up there. Are you worried about running out of gear with the 24.5" slick as aposed to the 26"? My friend has some slicks that he was going to use before he did an awd swap I am pretty sure they are 24.5" tall but I am worried that with the 450ish whp I am expecting I will be running out of gear.

I havent dyno'd it yet. I was recently searching for local dyno's and I came across one about 2 hrs. from me. I'm going to try to arrange an all-day thing for our local DSM club so we can all get dyno'd there. Within the next 6 weeks, I hope to get my car on the dyno at least. (i still gotta do some more tuning. :shhh: It's running at 22 psi, but I'm knocking a little now) I shouldn't run out of gear with these slicks. I did the math a few days ago. Here's the specs on my 18" wheels that I ran last time at the track:

Circumferance = 78.8" Diameter = 25.1" Rotations per 1/4 mile = 201

And here's the specs for the slicks:

Circumferance = 76.97 Diameter = 24.5" Rotations per 1/4 mile = 205.8

With the 18's at the track, I still had some 3rd gear left after 1320 ft. It's going to be close with these slicks, but I think I'll make it. 450 whp is very impressive. I am only hoping/aiming for 350 whp. I'm leaving my house in about 20 min to go to the track; unfortunately my car is in the body shop still, so it looks like I'll be watching tonight. I'll be running my car at the track with these slick in 2 weeks though, so I'll post results then. In the meantime, here are some pics of my new slicks for your viewing pleasure. :rocks:

There is a place here in south bend called Kaizers auto something that has a dynojet dyno. Dont remember what they charged, but a little closer than 2hr drive.

paul I thought this would help you out a bit. I just picked up some slicks that a dsm used to use from a friend of mine. they aren't quite a 10" slick but they are 9.5x24.5x13. I am still having a hard time myself beleiving that a 13" wheel will fit over our front calipers but I will be using spacers and I will get measuerments of the wheels and what not up, I haven't had time to mount them up or anything. I'll keep you updated.

average of 1.8X for 60ft.

best of 1.76
Thanks for the info. That is the same size slick I just bought. Do you ever have problems with breaking any power transfer parts? axles, diff, trans, etc....?? I am seriously considering trailoring my car to the track next time I go, just in case I break something.

Yes, definitely measure those wheels and post the measurements. I dont understand how a 13" wheel fits over the caliper either.... The only thing I can think of is that they have a crazy small size rear spacing, making most of the wheel and tire stick out from the wheelwell.... What is the manufacturer of the wheels and the tires? Got any pics?

^^^ you know I really wish I could tell you the manufacturer of the wheel, but I don't know I have no one to ask the guy who owned them before me just kinda disapeared and no one can get ahold of him but I know for sure he did run them on a 2g gs-t. the slick itself is a micky thompson racemaster. and the wheels look really high quality and are extremely ligtht ever with the slick mounted, easy to pick up with one hand. so I am asuming pretty high quality for the rims, They do have quite a bit of back spacing(in towards the wheel well but they have about 1.5" at least of spacers bolted to the rim. But yes they will stick outside of the fender. I am not to low though only a prokit so we will see how it works out.

well I mounted one up just for shits and gigles and I am amazed but with stock 2g fwd brakes you have easily a 1/4-1/3" clearance between the caliper and a 13" rim kinda crazy. AWD brakesw would not fit without some hefty filling but a 14" rim should take car of all of that. I will post up pics later tonight when the wifey gets here with my digital camera, As far as rim measurment go this is all speculation but the rim appears to be about 8.5" wide. And I would say a good 5 inches is inside the wheel well the slick sticks out about 2-2.5" outside of the wheel well which isn't bad considering its a 9.5" wide. and with the 24.5" slick I have plenty of room for a 26" so that's what I will be upgrading to in the future. Now isn't that a peice of meat 26x9.5x13

pics as promised
EDIT: yes I know they are flat they have not been filled in close to a year they had about 4psi in them at time of pics no I don't run this tire pressure at the track.

Wow, that looks mean. Great pics. I cant wait to get my car back from the bodyshop next week, so I can test fit mine. That is crazy that that 13" rims fits so easily. Only bad this about going to a 26" is that you have to make sure you have plenty of room for them to swell. I know I dont have the room for that on my car.

I was just getting ready to purchase the same setup as above but i wanted to know how they worked out for yo?? I know this thread is 2 years old but I like the setup and hope it works so i can try it on my 1g

What rims are these on? 13" bogarts? What is the width and back spacing of them? If you are making serious power you might as well just pick up some 26x10.5s.
