I was invited by a neighbor to head out to Irwindale Speedway, for a little circle track race viewing last night.

When we got there, they were doing some crazy 8 runs. What I didn't realize for a few minutes was, it was the Figure 8 World Championships. Twenty three cars were competeing in the 60 minute race, and I think I counted maybe fifteen by the end of the race.

Jesse James was running and qualified in the top ten. Jesse ended up runing 3rd or 4th most of the night, and then Fred Bear #94, spun out and Jesse took over 2nd place with only a few minutes left in the race. On the last lap, Jesse was pushing hard on Jeff Shackelford #28, who was in the lead and Shackelford ran up on some slower traffic. Jesse made a run on him, and came within inches of taking the lead, and winning the race.

So it ended up:
1st - 28 Jeff Shackelford Indianapolis, IN
2nd - 666 Jesse James, Long Beach, CA
3rd 94 Fred Bear, Avon, IN

I have to say it was really pretty fun to watch, with several good crashes, and a lot of excitement.

Here are a few, not so good pix's from the night. I have such a time, getting decent pixs at night, from a distance with these digital cameras :D .

That's fun stuff to watch. I just got to watch school bus figure 8 racing like that, good times.

Reminds me of when I was a kid

Speaking of which, I remember when I was 10 or so and working at my uncles automotive garage, there was a rather short heavyset gentleman that owned the building, that ran ran crazy 8 races. he was contantly either fixing the existing car or starting over with building a new one.

At least they weren't pulling trailers, like the British do.

I have seen those on SPEED. Those can be pretty interesting, with boats, travel trailers etc.

It can be a bit boring at times as it's a much slower pace but when they wreck the buses can bend in odd ways!!WTF
