I drove to school today and dropped some kids off at the entrance and then headed up to the parking lot that i have to park in. As i was heading up there my steering started getting tight. i wiggle the wheel a bit and it would loosen and then get tight. I thought that it might be getting stuck in the snow. then i started smelling this burning smell coming through my vents. so i turned the heat off, but the smell still came in. by the time i got to the parking spot my power steering was completely gone and i was manually turning the wheel... kinda tough. i opened my hood and a little bit of white smoke came out but it appeared to be comeing from the area of the header, but im not sure exactly where it was coming from. does anyone know whats going on?? any help is appreciated! thanks

You're possibly out of PS fluid, check your levels.

Check to make sure your PS belt is still there.

Start your car, pop the hood, and inspect the PS pump while the engine is running. Is it moving, or is the pump seized?

Do those things, in that order, and you should be fine :)

When i got out to my car after school there was some orange stuff in the snow. my friend took me to autozone and i bought some PS fluid, put it in my car and attempted to drive it home. i got home and pulled it in the garage and popped the hood. orange stuff poured out the bottom and was all over the radiator. i found that the PS line coming from the bottom of the resevour had some how moved up against the idler pulley and the pulley burned/cut a hole in the tube, and the stuff went everywhere. not sure how it happened, but i removed the tube(not the easiest thing!!) and im ordering a new one today. thanks for your help!
