Strange electrical probs - alternator dead?

I just finished installing a new FP Big T28 on my '97 GS-T, and am having some very strange electrical problems.

Before I started any of the work, I accidentally dropped a wrench somewhere near the alternator (was just taking off the top heat shield) and got a spark. I didn't think much of it at the time, but, when I started the car up for the first time after the turbo install, the interior lights don't come on and the windows will not roll down (however, the sunroof will open). After driving it for a couple of minutes and turning off the engine, the headlights would not turn off. Started it again (it cranks just fine) and the battery light and the brake light came on after about a minute, and this time, when I turned off the engine, the horn beeped once and the lights turned off.

I'm assuming the alternator is fried, but could there be other probs as well? I don't have a voltmeter, so I can't really check much out.

TIA,
George G.

I'm wth Steve. But gah! Whenever working around the battery, or the battery terminal on the alternator, put a big chunk of cardboard over it first.
In the area of the battery, there are many true tales of a mechanic's wedding ring contacting the positive terminal, and a wrench contacting it to complete the circuit. The ring vaporizes, and in many cases the finger is lost. Quicker than you can say, "Owshit!"

Where's the fusable link located? Is there a replacable fuse inside, or will the entire thing need to be replaced.

I've heard those stories about rings and mechanics, which is why I almost always disconnect the battery whenever doing anything on the car, just happened to be a bit absent-minded when I did this.

Thanks again,
G

I haven't had to replace one but according to the manual its in the relay box under the hood on the passenger side. It should be a a large blue 100A fuse. I may be bolted on it's contacts.

It's not in the alternator.

I sure a few people here have replaced them and could tell you exactly what the procedire is.

92 Laser 1.8 manual

I did the same thing with a sockett wrench.........hit the alternator and the engine block...........im gonna try getting a new alt relay and see if that clears up some of my probs as well. this couldnt have anything to do with my loss of spark?anyone???????

Found it - in the fuse box, 100A (just like you said). It is bolted in, but it was a snap to fix. Car running normally.

ZB, I'd definitely check this if you did the same thing as me. It was easy to see it was blown once I looked at it.

Thanks again guys,
George G.
