Anyone Have Oil Filter That Comes Loose? [Merged 7-8]

Anyone have oil filter that comes loose on 2nd gen AWD.

I was thinking If a safety wire, on the oil filter will keep it from coming loose.

yeah...mine did that too...take off the oil filter and tighten the bolt that holes the oil filter ..and it should be fine.

JUst make sure you man handle that filter and tighten that bizznatch

i tried alot of man handling on that filter and it still came loose thats when i relized its not the filter

The most common problem seems to be the bolt that runs through the oil cooler come loose. Be carefull tighting it since you can crush the cooler and mix the oil and water inside it. You should clean the bolt and the fitting well then locktite it.
The some others have found a old gasket sticking to the cooler and that would make it hard to tighten the new filter correctly.

Allright, my oil filter keeps coming loose from under my car, i need a quick but reliable and ingenious solution to fix this, i dont understand why it would be coming lose. i pulled the stud out and wrapped it in lock-tyte, but it still comes loose once in a while. I hate not being able to turn my boost up to 15psi cause im scared that ill pop that basterd off there, its happened before. Im going to the track in medford in a few weekends and i dont think they would appreciate a 15 sec import to lose 5 quarts of oil on there track. kinda bumms me out about my new car.

damn, i was having the same problem for a while with my talon, all i did was remove the filter and tighten the fitting. it seems to have stopped my problem.

-Make sure the O rings of the oil filter and the oil cooler are still on it, don't tighten the stud too much, for you can crack the cooler.
-As a precaution, I install a steel small steel cable to the block, then secure the other end of the cable on the oil filter with a hose clamp to keep the filter from turning.

it could be the actual brand one one time i just got this really ghetto oil filter and it would leak like a b!tch. Then i got a Mobil 1 oil filter and i have never had a oil leak since

My oil filter and the oil filter housing keeps coming loose on me, and when i go to tight it back up it tights up fine everytime, any suggestions ?.

There is a nut behind the threads that the oil filter threads onto. If that is loose that will cause the oil filter to back off. I am not sure what the torque spec is off hand, but that is most likely your problem.

yeah your talking about hte big nut right there as soon as you pull the filter ?, if so thats the nut I have to keep tightning

My friend (nuggets) just lost all his oil tonight to the same gd problem. I thought I read somewhere that the water lines that run to the oil filter housing contribute to this somehow, and that bypassing those (just having them not run to the oil housing) may be a solution. IDK, but this kid is already on his second motor because of the exact same situation. We even mounted a oil pressure gauge right on the top of the steering column to prevent this, and sure enough, pressure just drops off, luckily we shut it off immediately and pushed the rest of the way home.

Bypassing the coolant lines will do nothing other than leave you without an oil cooler and the same problem of the filter backing off. You need to either replace the cooler and use some locktite on the housing side of the bolt/stud or convert to an air/air oil cooler housing and run an external cooler and then block off the water lines...

yea dude i was pissed. this is nuggets and im fixing my car at my friends house here. this has happened to me before in the past and i know it is because of the water-oil cooler. what i would like to know is... are there aftermarket air oil coolers available? or must i find a used one from a 6-bolt motor that can bolt up?? thnx

You can use any cooler you want, you just need the adaptor to make the cooler fit the housing. You will need the oil filter housing from a car with an air/air oil cooler, 6 bolts use a 90 oil filter housing and I *think* 7 bolts can get an evo oil filter housing to run an air/air cooler.

I am using a stock 90 oil cooler and havent had any problems yet, knock on wood...
