Shifter weight that is on the trans/counterweight/hammer head [Merged 10-6]

It makes a wonderful hammer head. You'll probably find shifting effort goes up just slightly. Yet another one of those goofy things on DSMs, like the slave cylinder speed orifice, the clutch system accumulator, the Ugly Mystery Box on the LICP, the 2G BOV....... etc.

how do you take this part off? It's right where the gear select levers are bolted to the trans. I need to take it off to finish my 1g head swap because the radiator hose is touching the counterweight. Thanks.

I'm actually curious as to how the shifting is affected when it's removed. . . smoother? Not as heavy??

Use a air grinder w/ a cutting wheel on it. It's a bi***, but you'll get it eventually. It doesn't affect shifter feel. If anything, I like it more after I did it, than before.

Sure, just cut it off. And then where will you be when you find fence damage on the lower forty and need a hammer for the staples?

Only another of the goofy things (clutch restrictor, clutch accumulator, LICP expansion tank) going on under a 2G's hood. All of which seem to make for a more "civilized" ladies' car.

oh gotcha OMG

So most ya'll run without the counter weight, even if not doing a 1g head swap? though i guess with a good clutch, you wouldn't need that "throw momentom"?

ok so i took my turbo out and i wanted to cut off my shifter weight should i do it and what are the pros and cons please help me

no real con -- most 1g in a 2g'ers have to do it.. i did it.
its less b/s a tad less weigh n biggie.
( the weight is suposed to help you shift ) i didnt notice much diff w/o it

I had to cut mine off when I went to a 1G head. It will not cause problems, just file the metal smooth so you don't rip a hose or anything.

It's yet another 2G mystery. There's a lump of steel on the shifter, out on top of the gearbox, that looks like a damned hammerhead. I guess it goes along with the LICP tank, the clutch "accumulator", the slave cylinder restriction and the pissy little BOV.

Hey all, what is that huge counterweight on the shifter linkage at the transmission on a 2g? is it removable? or will the car pop out of gear randomly.

I've always wondered about my wife's 97GST counterweight. If you guys hacked it off and show no ill effects, then what was the original purpose of the counterweight?
Reason I ask is because I too did the 14b swap on her car and had to make some massive rerouting of the lower intercooler pipe to clear this weight.
Please educate me!!

Thanks,
Steve

Ah damn... so that thing is gonna get in my way when I install my 14b eh? My tranny shifts nice... I would like it to stay that way. That thing has to be there for a reason.

Pf. I can't find a reason for the LICP expansion tank, nor that bizarre clutch accumulator, nor the slave cylinder restrictor. I figure the hammerhead is there to absorb some of the shock if some delicate flower misses a shift and might bruise her hand with the horrid vibration coming back through the stick.

Either that, or it's to tack up WANTED posters for any bushwhacker who door-dings you at the mall.
