I recently bought a '91 Talon AWD and after fixing a bunch of stuff I figured I was done until I started putting on performance parts. Then driving home from the gym one day I started smoking out of the exhaust. The intercooler's got oil in it and the 14b has shaft play. I swapped in a E316g yesterday and while taking off the 14b I noticed the vband bolt was, at best, finger tight. Now I'm trying to determine the health of the 14b because there isn't that much shaft play.

So could a loose v-band cause a turbo to seep oil or die prematurely?

was the smoke coming out your exhaust white? i take it, it stopped after the new turbo?...

I forget the color exactly; it was well over a year ago.

I take it you're trying to decide if it's the HG or turbo? I've never lost a HG, but the easiest way to tell if your turbo is shot is to pull the LICP. It will be full of oil.

It did and didn't stop after the turbo. I emptied the IC, but did not clean it with gasoline, so it still smoked pretty good for a while. I cleaned it out and made 2stroke gas for my weedeater at the same time...

;)
