Can rod bearings weaken?

I spun 3 rod bearings a few weeks ago. I thought maybe I had over-revved or been low on oil. The shop took it apart, the ONLY thing wrong were the rod bearings. He said a lack of oil (or oil pressure) would have caused the main and crank journals to be jacked up. Both were fine. He said the bearings probably went because of detonation. I have DSMLink and my stock boost gauge set to a knock gauge. Whenever I see the knock gauge go up and my CEL come on, I let off the gas. The night my rod bearings went, I didnt see the gauge go up at all.

My question is can the rod bearings weaken and just go out over time? Had I ran a few times with really bad knock in the past (I'm sure it's happened), could they have weakened enough to go out in the future?

I'm confused because I KNOW there was no knock when I ran that night.
