I've been having weird problems lately and now my car won't start at all.

NT, 2.0L, Automatic, 130k

A week ago while driving to my parents the car started to die while at 70Mph, I pulled over

and it idled just fine like nothing happened. I started to pull back out and it did it

again while I was speeding up and actually died this time. I pulled over and shut the key

off. Put the hood up, couldn't see anything loose or leaking, oil OK. Got back in, started

it up, drove the last 40 miles of the trip no problem.

Changed the fuel filter approx 3 days later. Also got rid of the catylitic convertor for

straight pipe. Also check the o2 sensor. It gave me .4 volts to start which is good. After

giving the car gas it went up to .7 which is ok I guess, but it wouldn't go down after that.

Car started and idled fine after the change so I shut it off. Later that day I went out for

pizza and the car simply shut off at 35Mph. It wouldn't start for about 15 minutes. The

first time it started it died 20 seconds later. Started up again after several tries and

made it back home no problem.

Approx 3 days later I drove back from my parents, nearly a 200 mile trip, absolutely no

problems.

Today after church was over the car wouldn't start for five minutes, then started and drove

home just fine. I parked it and took the ECU out to see what shape it was in. Maybe ok,

maybe not. If it is ok I'll need to change the three capicitors soon.

Put the computer back in and started the car. It died within a minute. It wouldn't start.

The fuel pump is getting power and I think I can hear it shut off after I have someone try

and start the car.

I checked the spark plugs, one of them had part of the ceramic material broken off, but the

2 metal conductors on it were fine. I replaced the plugs. That didn't help. The wires are

only a month old.

I checked for a spark, but I'm not sure if I did it correctly. I grounded each of the wires

one at a time with one of the old plugs and the only time I saw a spark was when my

assistant(wife) stopped trying to start it.

Every time that I actually do get the car to start it dies within seconds.

The ecu gives the code 22, which is the code for the crankshaft sensor. I checked the

connection following the directions in Haynes repair book, it was ok. After resetting the

computer it gave the OK code. on-off-on-off-on-off...

I changed the timing belt 2 months ago shortly after I purchased the car. With 120k miles.

It still had all the original belts. I would have like to have changed all 5 but I didn't

have the time or money at the time. I took the belt cover off and the belt appears to be

perfectly ok. The old one was cracked at every tooth and missing 2 teeth.

Please help, I'm still quite a begginner mechanic so I'm not entirely sure where to go next.

My guesses as of right now are the crank sensor, fuel pump, fuel line(much rust on this

car), ecm, efi.

Any ideas? If I can think of anything else I've done, test or had problems with I'll let you

know.

Please help my baby... :talon:
