ok so i started logging on my car the other day because it seemed to not be putting out like it should. i logged rpm knock and timing. i was getting knock spiking up to 43 which is liek insane isnt it? im new to the turbo side of the dsms but know a good amout about them. also timing was anywhere from -3 to 43. what am i getting this crazy knock? It comes and goes too like it will run great for a while pull real strong then sometimes i get the knock and the crazy triming retard/advance. i am not sure what the base idle is set at because i have only had the car for 2-3 weeks now and its had idle surge sience i got it but tomorrow i am going threw the throttle body and cleaning it and inspectiong the isc which i already replace with one from the junk yard. i am also randomly throwing cel for the intake temp the coolant temp and barometric pressure. i also replace the mafs with one from the junk yard because it was throwing those codes and they went away for a week and came back tonight. i also believe i threw one for air flow but only for a min beause i cleared the cels and the other came back but the airflow did not. what im thinking right now is that maybe i have a bad cam angle sensor, knock sensor, or bad base timing, the kid who owned the car before me was kind of an idiot and iv fixed most everything he didnt care to or messed up but i wanna get rid of this problem that 43 counts of knock is scareing me this is my car that gets me back and forth between college and right now im at home so i need to get it fixed by sunday night. i had to limp her home tonight so she wouldnt knock. it seems like something sets it off then get turned off and it run fine. it makes me thing somethign is faulty. please any and all help will be enormously appreciated. thank you mike

Just wondering why the balance shafts going bad would cause this.
Because with bad BS bearings the balance shafts can then bounce around and make noise.

Also check the condition of the knock sensor. If it's original it's likely that the stuff they fill it with has broken down and oozing out making it hypersensitive.

yep bearing shavings in the old oil and some metal flakes in the current oil. so ill be pulling the engine to make the install easier and to replace some leaky gaskets and just clean the engine and engine bay up, and replace the dented oil pan. i am hopefully going to be pulling the engine tomorrow when my dad gets back in town so i can figure out what i need to fix along with a balance shaft eliminator kit. anything else i should check or replace while I'm down there. i was told the timing belt and tensioner was changed right before the previous owner bought the car back in march, but i am gonna check it out since i will be in there. thanks for the help. i have one more question. why does the knock come intermittently? and why does it suddenly run like crap when it knocks does the ecu make it do that when it reads knock.

Crap. Sorry, sometimes it sucks to be right.

It'll set off the knock sensor and retard the timing, just like ignition ping will.

Update
well i got the engine out this weekend and took the timing belt cover off and it appread that it may have been off one tooth and the rear balance shaft was off one turn. it appeared that the bearings were fine though and there were very minimal if any shavings of bearings still in the oil. also the knock sensor was oozing out alot so i ordered a new knock sensor and have the balance shaft elimination kit. with this new information why do you think it was causing such high of knock? i can understand the ignition timing with the cam being off a tooth along with it reading knock. do you just think it was a bad knock sensor? thank you for all help. Mike
