:dsm: new to tuning, i have almost no knock in 5th gear from 4500-5500 rmp @ wot, but in the 20-30 % throttle range my logger is telling me i have 45 counts of knock until i let off the gas almost all the way, can lifter tick cause false knock sensor readings? thanks for your time..:)

Yes it is phantom knock more then likely. And yes lifter tick will cause phantom knock. Happens quite a bit. Try changing oil weights or just a diff brand of oil. Also Lucas makes a oil stabilizer(sp?) and it seems to work quite well.

Welcome to phantom knock 1g hell!!
I tried everything to get rid of it well nearly..new knock sensor, new plugs, wires, coilpack, powertransistor, new fuel pump, injectors, afpr, new ecu and
new tps and few other things.never did change the lifters and suspect that would have helped. I finally got rid of it with a eprom ecu and custom chip with phantom knock elimination code.
Man that phantom knock is horrible. Can't beat a diesel rabbit when it hits and it was making it way harder to tune the car also.
I would go straight to new 3 lifters you can install them without even removing your cams.
And then if that don't work buy an eprom ecu and get the chip. Or go insane!!!

A new knock sensor can't hurt either an posted an easy way to do it .you don't have to remove anything go from drivers side and reach down and swap it out.

Good luck..I have a 2g now but selling my 92 and sold the eprom ecu and all the phantom knock is back. I never did change out lifters.

As everyone has told you, yes lifter tick can cause phantom knock. Then again there are many things that can cause it.
I've spent a lot of time on it, even to the point of logging it with DSMlink(a while back).
Spend the $138 or so on some 3rd generation lifters. It will also help you out in the future because over time it will slowly(or quickly) get worse.
I had this problem but with worse symptoms. Once I dropped in the new lifters all was well. Phantom knock completely disapeared.

Good luck
