Ticking, but I don't think from lifters.

Let me explain the problem. I can haer a ticking sound come from the engine bay. The ONLY time i hear it is when i am idle and I put it in neutral and let my foot off the clutch. I am not sure if it ticks while im driving cause its not loud enough for me to hear over my exhaust + fuel pump. If I put my foot on the clutch the ticking will totally stop until I let off again. A friend of mine who is rebuilding his 3000GT engine things that it is a bearing problem with the crank. So, he suggested I drop the oil pan and take a look at what I can find by looking at the crank. Any ideas as to what this could be? Am I just wasting my time by dropping the oil pan cause its something unrelated? Any help would be great cause I plan on doing this in about 3 days.

My Eclipse did that about a year ago and I had to replace my Idler pulley and my tentioner. Look into that quickly....dont wqnt the tentioner to go out b/c you'll skip time and then your screwed. But after I replaced my pulley and tentioner my ticking noise stopped immediatly. :dsm: :thumb:

How much does that run? Should i just go up to a parts store and do it myself? Or is it like a complicated thing to do? Sounds pretty easy to do so i may just bust out my Haynes and look into it. Any tips would be nice LOL.

From when I read this. My first thought was rattling from the throw out bearing. Does the sound come from the passenger side wheel well?

Do you think maybe they didnt change out the throw out bearing when the clutch was put in? or installed incorrectly? Either way... should i just let it go till I need a new clutch? or is this pretty serious?

Mines actually taps a little too, my mechanic said it will be ok unless it gets any louder. I can only hear it if If my passenger side is against a wall or another car. I do know that the sound is coming from the throw out bearing thow.

Well, got my car from the dealer today. Coolant leak is fixed yay. Asked bout the ticking noise and they said its coming from the engine but they cant tell what it is. Said I need to fixed my CEL's before they can figure it out? So the idle air control motor and the manifold differencial pressure sensor are making the engine tick? I am not sure where to start... not sure what to do.

If it's related to having the clutch in or out, it can only be a few different things:

Throwout bearing is bad
Clutch disc springs are making noise for some reason
Clutch fork rubbing on pressure plate (doubtful)
Beginnings of crankwalk are generating some rythmic noise
Something do to with cruise control (far fetched, but there is a switch that tells the cruise the clutch pedal is being pressed)

I'd put my money on throwout bearing. Every car I've ever heard with some sort of rattling or clicking when the clutch is either in or out has been fixed when I did a clutch job and replaced all the parts you're supposed to replace.

Good luck,

Ryan
