This is going to be a biotch to trace. I have a hard time beliving that the carpet over the fuel pump was keeping the smell away. What about the two vent hoses that are on opposite sides, what are those for? 91 gsx btw. Any other ideas?

Ulgh, good luck. You have thirteen-year-old rubber hoses and connectors all over that tank, plus the plumbing for the gas supply and return. None of which is out where you can see it. And it won't take much of a vent hole for you to be able to pick up the stench of gasoline.

Just gotta get in there with a flashlight and an inspection mirror, and keep looking.
