Sounds like rod knock, but bearing just replaced...?

I just bought a '91 TSi AWD, and it sounds like it has rod knock but all the bearings were just replaced and done correctly. The knock goes away when the spark plug wire is removed. I'm guessing it has a bent wrist pin in the piston, any ideas?

You almost can't bend gudgeon pins, but you can crack pistons or damage the wrist pin bushings. Were the bearings done in-car, without taking the crank out?
