Hey guys, I'm going to be needing a reliable, trustworthy machinist in or around Redding, CA. (way NorCal, as in closer to Oregon/Nevada than Sac). I suppose I'd be willing to travel if that's what I have to do to get the job done right but I would really like to find somebody pretty close to home.

Can any of youguys recommend somebody?
 
what kind of machining do you need performed? the machining on my block was done at Rob's Machine Shop in hayward, ca. the block has been pushed to 477awhp.

but again, it all depends on what you need done, if you just need someone to mill something flat or deck a block..pretty much any machine shop can do it
 
i'm basically looking to build myself a bulletproof motor

I'm not ready to do anything yet but when I am I'm going to want basically everything that can be done to be done to the engine. I'll be putting stroker kit in so it'll be all new internals and I'll need it bored .20 over probably and honed. I'd like it race balanced to however many rpms. There will be headwork. Probably at the same time I'm going to want to port my intake manifold and port the inlet to match the 60mm TB I want.

I know there's more and I haven't even got the parts that I'll need yet and I haven't done all the research to know exactly what I want done. I'm just sort of starting to put out feelers and see what I'm getting myself into machine work wise.

What all did you have your machinist do to your motor?
 
are you doing a 4g63 stroker swap?

my block has been bored over, eagle/wiseco setup, micropolished crank, decked and assembled by rob's machine shop.

my head has extensive port work, machined for 1mm oversized valves
 
I'm going to be pushing the 420A as far as it can go in our cars. I'm gonna stroke it to 2.2 (parts from howell most likely) and do some headwork and then I'll probably go with the Hahn Stage 2 turbo with the bigger turbo they offer and portfueller. I do like the 4G63 and I think a GSX or TSi AWD will be my next project but for now I'm going to be sticking with the 420A.

It sounds like you basically got the same things I want done on my motor. How was the whole thing with Rob's machine shop. Good service? Good turnaround? Are you completely satisfied with what they did to your motor?
 
If you're going to make the trek all the way to Hayward I'd recommend FFTec over Rob's. Rob's is great but FFTec is undoubtedly the best DSM specialty shop in NorCal. They'll build your motor anyway you want it and it's basically as good as it gets. Plan ahead though, their wait times for motor work is usually upwards of a month... but hey, it just reinforces how great they are.
 
I will keep that in mind. I was reading good things about those guys on another thread on here anyway so that may be an idea.

I'd really like to find somebody within an hour or two of where I live if that's possible at all. But if there's nobody north of Sacramento who can give me what I want then I may have to make the trek.

umm....kinda.

FFTEC does not do any in house machining. The machine work is done at Rob's. He asked for a machine shop, so Rob's is it.

as far as how good the motor is?...the motor in my car is driven daily and has been for about a year. it has seen as much as 470awhp on FFTEC's dyno on pump and meth. Currently making 352awhp on 23psi and straight 91 octane.

does it matter that all youguys are GSX guys with the 4G63 and I've got the 420A

It seems to me that from a Machinist's perspective it shouldn't matter since any built engine is going to need the same stuff basically.

What do youguys think?
 
you can always call and find out. sean @ FFTEC can help you out with your setup. you can definitely go through FFTEC, it may actually keep things less complicated for you. i'd give them a call.
 
Over the summer, these two brothers went to Sean with the 420a's and like $12,000 each. He basically went to town with them and I'm sure their motors were built. Since it seems Rob's did the motorwork the answer to your question is no, I don't think it matters.

He's right, you would see some sort of mark-up... after all it is a business. But it would save you the trouble of going to Rob's, waiting in the Bay Area until the block is done, picking it up, taking it to FFTec and then having them put it together (which would probably take a few weeks in itself). I mean... if you were to live here it'd be a different story, but I'll bet you're looking to minimize the amount of trips you make. Sometimes convenience is worth paying for :)

but I really want a 2g GSX. And I think I can find one for a decent price. Then I can sell my N/T and my Acura

gonna have to look into that :)

then if I build THAT motor I'll have to use Rob/FFTec i think

I was under the impression from a previous post that you were irrationally set on building the 420a just because it's something you wanted to do. If you want to be sensible though, dump it and wait till you pick up a gsx or at least a gs-t before you start building. N/T cars made turbo are just illogical. Even Sean thinks so :coy:
 
I really love my N/T because it was my first car. Also, when I was 18, I sorta blew a fist sized hole in my block because I was an idiot. Now that I've swapped engines and revived it I'm just that much more attached.

I don't think I'd trade for a GS-T. I want AWD. But yeah, I've been peeking around for GSX's and I found some in California here for decent prices. If I get one cheap I can just rebuild THAT motor and not worry about how many miles are on it or anything :)

Or better yet, maybe I'll find one on dsmtrader.com that already has a 6-bolt swap and some nice mods for a decent price :)

Ok, I'm not sure this post had a point, but I'm close to selling my Acura and I'm getting exited. :)
 
so I did it guys, I joined the darkside. Got my 95 GSX last weekend. From some kid in oregon. He did his research when upgrading (for the most part) but didn't take the time to learn how to take care of a car.

So I've already got a little bit of a project ahead of me getting it to moddable condition. I'm pretty stoked though. Definitely getting used to the sound of that turbo spooling.

Plus it rained the last couple of days here in Redding (weird, huh) so I got to play with my AWD a little bit. :)
 
According to the guy I got it from it has a 6-Bolt swap about 30K ago and a tranny rebuild very recently by Lucas English w/ English Racing up in WA. I'm still working on getting the paperwork on all of it since the kid isn't terribly organized. So far I have no reason to disbelive him though.

Is there an easy way to tell the difference between a 6-bolt and a 7-bolt motor though? Without pulling the tranny to get a look at the flywheel LOL.
