Im building a 1990 talon tsi awd, im wondering if i can just use the safc 1 i already have. I know ecm linck is the way to go but thats not an option rite now. I have evo 560cc,tdo5 bastard 20g,ported 2gm mani, open dump o2,full 2.5" exhaust, weisco 8.3 to 1 pistons, scat rods. Will i be ok just using the safc 1 for a while until i can afford a link.

Some people are totally against a piggy back system but i think is a decent tuning solution till you afford better. So yea you'll be good to go till you can get link. Also you might want to check into Jackel's tuning solutions, I hear their quite good for the coin.
I ran my Denso 660's at 15psi on a E316G and some other mods just fine till upgraded to linkV3. Just dont try to squeeze every bit of HP from setup.

Seems like you have a decent motor I wouldnt risk it using cheapo piggy back. All it does is trick the ecu, and you can only trick it so much then you wonder why your shit broke. But it doesnt hurt to use it in the meantime. Just wire up the harness and google the wire diagram.

Piggybacks work better the smaller the difference between stock, and aftermarket injectors. With 550's you won't have any issues.

Even with 560s, the timing will be around 21-24 degrees at WOT. How much boost would you dare to run on a 20g with that much timing on pump gas? The only real control would be to play with the CAS. On race gas, meth, or E85, however, the timing will work in your favor to an extent; but at some point it may still be too aggressive.

560s are also not a lot of injector for a 20g, you'll definitely want to keep a close eye on duty cycles. I'd find a copy of TMO and get a wideband, at the very least.

I agree on the wideband if possible. Maybe even some type of logger just to see what's going on with the timing. It's definitely possible just be carful and don't go to crazy. Right when your ready to upgrade injectors ecmlink should be right with them. I remember the days when most had afc's haha..

You could also just put in a set of 450cc injectors for now and keep the boost low till you can save for ecmlink.

Also to log knock sum. Pretty hard to know what's going on when you aren't even logging knock.

+1

I use to run an S-Afc on my first 1stgen back in the day. I smoked the motor due to the agressive timing maps that the stock ecu has. They are very aggresive for a turbo larger then the 14b that they were designed for.

Keep in mind that a candle burning on both ends is twice as bright and last half as long.

Do your self a cost saving favor and get a way to log that thing.

OR BETTER YET....follow the advice of the others and put the 450's back in and keep the boost down until you can save up for dsmlink. :thumb:

ahh dang it i just sold my 450cc, what about getttind a tuned ecu? there has to be a cheaper way that wont kill my motor i was thinking of just going maf tranlator untill a link, but a tuned ecu could solve a the timing problem couldnt it?

Get a logger so you can see whats going on as far as knock, fuel trims and stuff like that, sell the safc get link lite when you can and keep the boost low until you get a wideband, take it slow and eventually youll get there. the 2g maf and the 560 are a great combo i had that set up for a minute but got the full set up for the maf for 400 bucks about 7 years ago, car ran great upgraded to link full to take advantage of all the features.

I'm gonna bring this thread back for a bit to see what I advice I can get on this topic as well. The setup I'm planning on running looks like this: FP Manifold, Evo III 16g, PR recirculated o2 housing and full 3 inch PR downpipe to Thermal R&D Exhaust with 550cc injectors with an SAFC to tune. I don't plan on trying to run high boost or anything crazy, I'm just going to be using this setup till I can save for an eprom and link. Besides what I have, what else do you all recommend that I get to run this sort of setup? Keep in mind it could be up to six months or more before I'll be able to save up enough for link. Kids gotta eat and the wife likes when I pay bills instead of buy car parts Haha

Oh and I almost forgot, I'll be running a Walbro 190 fuel pump as well

Just be smart about it. At least have a wideband so you can tune your WOT. And you must have a logger. You'll need this to tune your idle and cruise fuel trims. And always log knock. Get it tuned at WOT with a good afr and no knock and you'll be fine.

Yeah I just finished looking at Widebands on the classifieds, so I guess I'll check out some loggers as well. I've been trying to go about this as smart as possible, and I realize I could have spent money elsewhere on upgrades before some of the other stuff but I've already invested a lot of money in to my 1G in the five years I've had it just fixing issues from the previous owners not taking care of maintenance and little things. It's still not even seen the track to get a baseline pass, so the last thing I want is to blow it up before I have any chance of enjoying it a little.
