So, i really don't feel like paying for that 50$ kit..

whats the thread and lengh of the bolt it uses.

ill go pick one up at a store or something...

The threads are 8mm x 1.25mm about 8" long should work.

I usually just pull the auto tensioned off and put it in a c-clamp. Slowly tighten it and put the pin in the auto tensioner.

I went and got some threaded rod, and a couple nuts, cut them to length and welded the nut on. cost me like $5 and now i have like 4 of them.

I made my first timing tool that way- I think it's still in use as a battery hold-down on the car that Christi's currently driving.

I've since made my own out of a piece of 8mm x 1.25 all-thread with a nut welded on the end, then I bought the Jay Racing full timing tool kit recently when it was on sale. I must say the Jay Racing tension tool is the strongest and works the best out of the three.


Keep in mind you won't need this tool if you have the ability to pull the tensioner off the car. I actually use the eccentric tool more than I use the tensioner tool because 90% of the time I have no need to collapse the tensioner while it's still on the car.

what do i need then; if the tensioner has the pin in it

i read and read and im still confused on this timing belt crap haha

i can pull it off and put it back on..

With the pin still in the tensioner I've always just preloaded the eccentric with 24 inch lbs and tightened the center bolt, and when you pull the pin and rotate the engine a few times the measurement at the tensioner should be within 3.8-4.5mm. Been doing it this way for years without a single issue.
