I'm about to buy a used awd tranny from a local and wanted to know how to check if the transmission was any good, anyone have any tips?

It's kind of one of those things where its what the person says. You won't really know if it is good until you put it in. You can run through the gears manually and check to see if it goes into gear; but knowing if is grinds or other problems you won't.

^^^^^ also check for cracks on the transmission case. when i was looking for a tranny i found one with a crack under some oil/dirt/grease junk and was a as is deal. saved my self some future problem and my money.

Take off the service housing and inspect what you can visually - look for metal flakes in the fluid as well. If the fluid is recently changed, I scrutinize the unit even more... they may have changed it to cover up flakes. If time allows, I'd take out the center diff and inspect that as well. Definitely check for cracks, as stated above.
