Transmission gaskets?

Hey, i've got a 1g awd laser 5spd. , and was wondering if anybody has replaced both of the endcase gaskets that face outwards toward the pass. front wheel, or if this is just done with a sealant, or would this revolve around a complete teardown?
The only info i've gathered is that the gears have to stopped from the outside via a pennie with a custom bend, in order to break the main nut loose!?

All the ones I have owned are sealed with silicone but I dont know what is involved with taking it off tough.

This is what I used when I reassembled my transmission. Any decent auto parts store should carry this.
